Who Killed Lafayette on True Blood?
If you just watched the last episode of True Blood you know that Andy Bellefleur, Sookie, and Tara find what appears to be a dead body in the backseat of Andy’s car. What we, the audience, see is the foot of an African-American man. With red nail polish.
Since we saw Lafayette painting his nails red in Episode 11 titled “To Love Is To Bury“, AND since we know that Lafayette got attacked while taking out the garbage at Merlotte’s, we assume it’s his body in Andy’s car.
If we’re correct it means that someone (or someTHING) killed Lafayette.
So, who do you think attacked him?
If you’re interested in learning more about Lafayette’s attack you’ll need to read the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series titled Living Dead in Dallas. This is a great book that provides backstory on some of the characters that the HBO series might not reveal.
Lafayette was hands-down one of the most likable characters on the show. He was a great observer of life and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. The actor, Nelsan Ellis, did a great job bringing his character to life. Season 2 won’t be the same without him.

Quinn, the next new character on HBO series!
A character who will be well known next season,he is a were-tiger or were-panther but something that comes up on you fast.
Lafayette did NOT die the way he did in book so reading book will SPOIL NOTHING.
Such differences that its like 2 True Blood stories going on!
I love the show and the books and my answer is a guess it came from nothing I’ve read.
I cannot get enough of these stories!
Lafayette did not die. the person in the back seat of andy’s car is miss janet the exorcism lady. Tara killed her because mary-anne told her to you will find out in season 2 which has finished.
Actually it was “Eggs” Benedict Tally who killed Miss Janet, Mariann put her influence on him and she said that she was not true with HER influence on the spirit world.
Bill does, they hint it alot with after the scene where lafayette dies and then afterwards bill is shown saying i fed on someone and fully healed.
oh god you are sooooo wrong its hilarious
BILL? Oh come on…! What motivation would Bill have to kill him? Unless Lafayette’s supplier of V -WAS- Bill. Bill could justify killing him by convincing himself that Lafayette had endangered his identity being revealed by his association with the V, thanks to Jason’s big mouth, and his relationship with the vampire hating congressman. Okay, so maybe Bill could have a reason to kill him. I talked myself into believing it.
If you’re going with the theory that a vampire may have attacked Lafayette, I’d say that Jessica would be a better bet than either Bill or Eric. Jessica is out of control and would take pleasure in killing someone.
I agree with you, i think is Jessica…
Obviously you did not follow the story line or you would have known that BILL WAS NOT the supplier of V. So therefore could not have a motive for harming Lafyette. The gay vampire that Jason Stackhouse and his girlfriend kidnapped and kept in Jason’s basement was the supplier! Personnally I think that the girl that Bill sired did the deed to Lafayette
Lafayettes supplier was Eddy, not Bill. If Bill killed Lafayette it would be just for blood to heal. If Lafayette is dead, then he should be killed by someone we know already, or else its sort of pointles plotwise. This series is already low on likeable characters, they should let him live. The motives are sort of shoddy too. The serial killer being Rene was very random.
Suki is open minded about vampires but freaks out over a shifter? That isn’t holding water. And Im not buying the “he didn’t tell her” thing either. Why would he be obligated to tell her anything about himself? Because he kissed her? Do all guys you have kissed tell you every single secret? That would make for a talkative New Years eve party. Lame.
This series has potential if they veer far from the book i think. Suki herself isn’t a great character, or even a believable one. She could just as well be called Sulky. And her ability and demeanor changes by the second! In episode one Sulky is like a martial arts expert with that chain taking on two tough people, but then she needs to be constantly protected by a guy whose ability is to turn into a collie? How will that even help? Then first she is a prude, then she is a skank? Oh, and she only reads peoples minds when they are thinking something either misleading, or else that she is sexy, which she isn’t very.
And what the heck is wrong with the vampires? if they have lived over a hundred years they would know not to kill humans if they can avoid it. Its a very good way to get staked. They only have two ways of surviving us; to hide as a myth, or to obey the laws of the land to the letter. Why would the head vampire say that it was a terrific idea for a girl to die in their nightclub so they could all get blamed and killed? They should have given Bill a medal. And why doesn’t Bill play up that point? These are dumb vampires. Also there is no reasonable explanation for why some people have the same character as vampires as they did when human, like Bill, while others, like the annoying girl, are now total polar opposites.
You’re hilarious. I love your whole take on the show. Amen and amen!
well bill did fead on him cuz lafayette was allready dead . remmember the grandmother, bill or any vampire cant refuse a dead body full of blood just laying there .
Lafayette is probably just fine. The body in the car may just be Ms.Janette who performed the ‘exorcisms’ on Tara and her mother, she had red polish on her feet too.
Here’s hoping you’re right. Just a few more days and we’ll know!
Watch it again. During the season final episode the big blond Sheriff vamp drops off the chick that Bill created (turned vamp). On his way out the door, he says something that sounds french, but he does say Lafayette’s name. I’m thinking it’s him and the vamp hierarchy.
Actually it was Swedish, not French – rough translation “O sweet freedom!”
WHOA WHOA WHOA! Wait! If what you say is true, then Bill could have killed Lafayette as his favor to the medieval French vampire dude! OH MAN
no bill isnt the killer
all the signs pointing to Bill killing Lafayette seem to be a little overkill, no? could definitely be the writers making us want to jump to that conclusion all the way til next summer.
the “social worker”, however…already has some uncivil past with Sam AND appears to be a shifter as well. wouldnt put it past her to shift into an animal and kill Lafayette as another ploy to screw with Sam (looks like she’s already taking great joy in the fact that Tara is one of his employees AND that Tara sings her praises) or even get him BLAMED for the murder. notice how freaked he gets in the last scene as he raids his safe like he’s ready to flee town. thoughts?
Yes, it’s clear that Maryann Forrester will have a prominent role in Season 2. She’s clearly got some sort of power or knowledge that got Sam spooked enough to want to pull up roots and leave town. Did anyone notice how much money Sam had in his safe? Perhaps he keeps it there because he knows there’s always a chance someone will discover his true identity and he’ll be forced to flee.
I just hope she doesn’t harm Tara because Tara appears to have finally found some sort of inner happiness.
New lady is not a shifter, she is a Maenad. Look it up on wikipedia! She came from the books but in a very very very different way. Tara had nothing to do with her arrival!
read the books people, it wasnt bill compton and it wasnt eric northman (vampire sheriff)
the tv show tried to give you a big enough hint by showing Lafayette trying to climb up high,
In other words ‘what’ attacked him was charging on all fours
it even showed you the camera looking up towards lafayette to prove that lol
You make some good points however the series has strayed from the books on several occasions:
-Bill and Jessica
-Amy Burley and Jason’s relationship
-Sam and Tara’s relationship
-Lafayette’s relationship with Eddie and the senator
-Eddie’s kidnapping
-Maryann Forrester and Tara’s relationship
-Tara’s mother’s exorcism
-Tara’s exorcism, etc., etc.
Alan Ball took quite a few liberties this season. It will be interesting to see how he explains Lafayette’s attack in Season 2.
yes but who kills lafayette is kinda crucial…bill and eric cant be the killers becuase that would throw ALL the books out of wack.
and the changes that they made arent that crucial…thats like saying…bill killed sookies grandmother. its too big of a plot change
There is no reason at all that HBO and Alan Ball need to be faithful to the books when it comes to killing off characters.
If you watch Dexter on Showtime you could have some idea of this. They can switch things up and make it work.
It is stupid to kill of characters that viewers tune in to watch, and HBO has no history of being stupid. They waited till the end of the series to kill Christopher on the Sopranos, and he had it coming for ages.
“and the changes that they made arent that crucial…thats like saying…bill killed sookies grandmother. its too big of a plot change” Whatever, you suck.
Thank you Southern Fried. I did notice that Lafayette jumped on the dumpster as if he was avoiding an animal. If it was a vampire you would think he would run instead.
We’ve seen that vampires can move so fast they can’t be seen (episode 2). Lafayette clearly saw whatever it was that was coming at him. Unless it was a weak vampire (and certainly there are a few around), I don’t think this would have happened.
I think Maryann had something to do with Lafayette’s murder, especially since his body was in Andy’s car. Remember when she was taking Tara from the jailhouse, Andy said something idiotic to her outside about where she had parked, and she said, “Andy Bellefleur, right?”
I haven’t read the books, but I’m sure werewolves are going to come into the picture soon…so maybe she is one. She’s a bit enigmatic at this point.
Aside from that, I definitely don’t think Bill would kill anyone he knew was close to Sookie, even if he needed to feed. Also, would he be able to charge Lafayette like that if he was in such a weakened state?
I think you’re right. You’ve got the best theory. They superficially want you to think it’s Bill (attack => dead body => feeding) but if you think about it in story terms, this is a start of a new mystery… and rarely are the first suspects (in this case, Bill) the real suspects.
I read a tiny bit about the new Pegasus lady (I call her that cuz she played the commander of the Pegasus on Battlestar Galactica lol)… about what she is species-wise (I won’t say)… but suffice it to say she’s some crazy bitch.
I don’t think Bill is dumb enough to not know Lafayette is Sookie’s friend. But the Andy connection is very perceptive of you!
Could also be a werewolf… some character not yet introduced. Apparently I read that there are supposed to be a bunch of characters introduced or something.
Also Bill’s “daughter” is a good possibility… but yeah I think Maryann seems like the best bet.
I agree with Southern Fried. Lafayette looked more freaked out than scared. If it was a vampire, he would’ve known not to just jump on the dumpster and would’ve probably tried to show some silver or something along that nature.
Lafayette is also a bad ass. I don’t think he would have jumped on the dumpster without thinking either what was coming at him couldn’t be fought or he didn’t know how to react. I’m hoping it was Maryann’s pig and he kicked the crap out of it and made bacon.
Yeah all that makes sense about Lafayette and all, but what was up with Andy Bellefleur’s car? He didn’t remember something, and Lafayette (if that is him) was in the car. You gotta think Andy has been quite demonic acting lately, pretty angry about a bunch of stuff. Something’s up with him.
I also want to know way more about this Maryann, why was she freaking out and vibrating with the pig?? I am hooked! I need to know…
For the record, I hate the ‘baby vampire’ Jessica. What a friggin Brat!
I think baby Jessica is HILARIOUS! Just what Bill needed! hahahaha She cracks me up every time! Next time he will think before just making a vampyre out of anyone!
Bill didn’t just make a vamp out of any old body that walked on by. He didn’t even want to make Jessica a vamp! He was forced to make her a vamp as punishment for staking Long shadow.
Some of you have commented on Sam pulling all of that money out of the safe and you’ve seen it as his “escape” plan. I guess that makes sense BUT I took it more like he was going to GIVE it to someone to make them leave. Buying his friends out of trouble.
Like, giving the money to Maryann because he knows she’s trouble? Yes, I could see that as well.
If Maryann is indeed a maenad then, as per the Charlaine Harris books, she demands some form of tribute. Perhaps this is his intent.
Hadn’t Lafayette been missing from Merlotte’s for two weeks? That foot didn’t look two weeks dead. Where had he been for the past two weeks???? I’ve read all eight books, but am a little puzzled.
I agree, the foot looked pretty “fresh” for someone that’s been dead for two weeks. Perhaps Lafayette was attacked but not killed – but that doesn’t explain his 2 week absence.
Exactly right. He’s been gone forever, why on earth would his body be dumped in Andy’s car? It doesn’t jive.
Based off of Tara and Sookie’s reactions, the body was probably pretty morbid. Plus Lafayette did have red nail polish on his feet, just like the foot. Sucks because Lafayette was awesome. Maybe this is just me and I’m wrong, but I just assumed that Maryann was a shapeshifter like Sam. Instead of a dog she she picks a pig. Anybody else think that Belflour’s son, (terry i think? the iraqi war vet) is a werewolf? They wouldn’t have mentioned werewolves if they weren’t going to introduce them sooner or later and there’s definately something wrong with Terry other than his post traumatic stress. Whatever attacked Lafayette must have been on all fours, but also been able to get on top of the dumpster. Werewolf sounds reasonable to me.
Terry isn’t Andy’s son! Terry is Andy’s cousin.
I personally think Lafayette isn’t dead.
Lafayette is one of the key characters to make this show exciting and the writers will know that it will cause a lot of disappointment amongst the audience.
I’m not saying this because I’m a Lafayette fan, I’m saying it on behalf of all TrueBlood fans. I mean if they kill Lafayette, then it might hurt the show ratings. =*(
I love Lafayette. He was one of the most popular and likable characters on the show. If he’s dead it will disappoint a lot of the fans. But then again, that’s what makes a show like this so great. We don’t really know how they’ll decide to play this out next season. Let’s say they decide to include his character next season even though he’s dead. They could do this by including lots of flashbacks which give us additional information about Lafayette and help explain his murder.
Has anyone thought about Lafayette coming back as a vampire?
In the True Blood vampire world, he would have to be “turned” before he actually dies; hence the urgency in getting Sookey blood to recover when she was injured by the Ratray’s. Lafayette sure has been a great character so I hope they come up with some way to keep him involved. I don’t see why they can’t deviate from the books.
I agree, Lafayette was a strong character and he will be missed. Since we’re not following the book that strictly, it could be someone else entirely!! I hope so, I love Lafayette. I watch the scenes with him over and over.
I agree that it wasn’t Bill. Bill had said earlier in the season that if a vampire killed someone, they would not be able to resist their blood and inevitably drain them of every drop. The body (wether it’s Lafayette’s or not) did not seem to be drained. I think the best bet is Belflours’s son. He’s very unstable and twitchy (kinda adorable might I add), but he’s the perfect match for something as moody and tragic as a werewolf. I’m hooked on the show and I want to read the books ASAP!
Booyah. Damn right. That body was not drained. Werewolf, baby.
I have a feeling that Maryann may be a shapeshifter as well as Sam, but one with more experience. Sam can’t turn into other people because he says they are too complex, but maybe she can. I started to wonder if she shifted into Tara’s mom and it was her (and not really Tara’s mom) who went to the jail cell and told Tara she couldn’t come home. This way Tara would have no where to go. I get the feeling she is a devil-lady.
Your theory about Maryann shapeshifting into people is similar to what Nickystix17 is saying. The more I think about this, the more I think about the plausibility of this theory. It could work. It would add additional mystery and suspense to next season’s episodes. Think about it: whenever a character did something out of the ordinary we’d wonder if it was really the person or if it was Maryann!
read the books and you will know. while the show is very much only based off the books, the majority of the plot is still the same.
Okay guys, what about this theory:
-The foot we see isn’t Lafayette’s, it’s Tara’s mother. Tara’s mother is killed by Maryann Forrester (or the guy working for MaryAnn) in order to remove one of Tara’s last family ties.
-Since Lafayette is Tara’s cousin, MaryAnn and her hog approach Lafayette (that’s why he jumps on top of the dumpster) and either attack him (but don’t kill him) or threaten him, causing him to leave town. This removes the last family tie for Tara.
Your thoughts?
“-Since Lafayette is Tara’s cousin, MaryAnn and her hog approach Lafayette (that’s why he jumps on top of the dumpster) and either attack him (but don’t kill him) or threaten him, causing him to leave town. This removes the last family tie for Tara.”
Or they just convert him. He’s as much their type as Tara.
Thats a great theory Fantaasygirl i hope that is correct
FantasyGirl had a similar theory to mine. The only difference is that I do believe that Lafayette is dead.
It is clear that Maryann is a Shapeshifter. The first time Tara saw Maryann she was naked (which Sam must always do in order to turn into a dog). Maryann also tried to shapeshift into the pig in her backyard. Think back to when Sookie first learned that Sam was a Shapeshifter…Sookie asked Sam if he can turn into a person. He responded by saying that people are too complex (not ruling out that it is impossible). In order to shapeshift, you must always have a model around. This is why Maryann is keeping Tara in her house. She keeps Tara around as a model in order to eventually learn how to shapeshift into Tara. As a result, Maryann will be able to get closer to Sam by shapeshifting into Tara.
Tara’s mother proved that she no longer wanted anything to do with Tara in the jail scene. She left Tara in jail and turned her back on her. Therefore, Maryann killed Lafayette who is the last of Tara’s family ties. Tara has no where to go and has no choice but to stay with Maryann.
Maryann is not only a Shapeshifter, she is also a Werewolf. She can shapeshift on command and whenever there is a full moon. The fact she is a Werewolf shows that she has a vicious side that has yet to be revealed. Maryann was a Werewolf when she killed Lafayette near the dumpster. Think back to when Sookie first learned that Sam was a Shapeshifter…She asked if he was some kind of Werewolf. He was insulted and responded that Shapeshifters do not like to be called Werewolfs because they are vicious creatures. This is why Sam was upset to learn that Maryann had found him once again. She is a threat to all shapeshifters because she is also a Werewolf. Only he knows what a threat she truly is.
The first conversation between Sookie and Sam in regards to shapeshifting was used to foreshadow Maryann’s upcoming character.
Any thoughts?
Nicky:
I love your theory about Maryann keeping Tara around so she can learn to shapeshift into something that looks like Tara!
Now, as for Maryann being both a shapeshifter AND a werewolf, hmmn. I’ve never heard of a werewolf being able to shift into other things but then again, it’s all fantasy, right?
Making Maryann a werewolf would be a good way to insert werewolves into the series.
I’m still hoping Lafayette was simply attacked, frightened into leaving town, or hiding out somewhere. Whatever the case the cliffhanger was brilliant because it’s got everyone guessing!
Now that’s a Great Theory! I can totally agree with this scenario!
This is a load of nonsense.
So what are your theories?
Also, if you don’t agree with what a commenter said please come up with something more original than “lame” or “this is a load of nonsense.” I’m being patient here because I usually don’t tolerate someone attacking other people’s comments. You can disagree without implying that the original commenter’s contributions aren’t worthy.
Here’s a thought: You’re making up facts. Do you actually watch this show?
“It is clear that Maryann is a Shapeshifter.”
No.
“Maryann also tried to shapeshift into the pig in her backyard.”
There is absolutely no reason to think that this is the case. When she was sitting in her backyard her pig was staring at her and she had weird warp waves around here. That’s it. You can’t just declare that she was trying to shapeshift.
“In order to shapeshift, you must always have a model around.”
No, that was never said. You’re trying to derive too much information from poor sources.
“Tara’s mother proved that she no longer wanted anything to do with Tara in the jail scene. She left Tara in jail and turned her back on her. Therefore, Maryann killed Lafayette who is the last of Tara’s family ties. Tara has no where to go and has no choice but to stay with Maryann.”
There is no evidence for this. This whole “family tie” theory isn’t based on anything. We’re just assuming that Maryann would do this.
“Maryann is not only a Shapeshifter, she is also a Werewolf. Only he knows what a threat she truly is.”
I don’t think any effort on my part is needed to point out how stupid and baseless this is. By the way, Captain Picard was also Q and Data. Woooahhh.
Okay, so what are your theories?
Look up maenad…….
Ok…LaFayette is not dead. Please remember Tara mother wore fire red toe nail polish and finger nail polish. If it is My boy LaFayette I do not and will not beleive that the is dead. That would be so bad for ratings. Everyone loves LaFayette and would just be devastated beyond belief is something was to happen to him. I would rather believe that he was out of it and clinging to dear life and crawled his way back to the Merlott’s or maybe a Bill did feed on him (hate to think that) long enough not to turn him but restore himself and placed him in the back of the car. I pray and hope this is the correct version! Dang it! Why do we have to WAIT TO NEXT SUMMER! THIS SUCKS! See this is sad…This show is worse than an addiction! You seem to never get enough! Don’t snatch my last life line..you took Deadwood and Rome away and left me sweating and shaking! …Dang it! Please put on a sneak peek for the 01/01/2009!
Shannon:
I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that Lafayette is still alive. One would think HBO would have some people responsible for checking online “chatter” about their programs to see what fans think. Heck, their own HBO True Blood Wiki shows that people love Lafayette. I’m hoping they’ve not written him off the series.
I Love Lafayette!!! He is TRUE BLOOD!!!! HBO TRUE BLOOD is nothing without LAFAYETTE!!!!!! He better not be dead! And I also like Tara and her attitude, so don’t kill her off either!
i personally think it was bill because obviously lafayette was jumped on the garbage can trying to avoid a vampire….i doubt he would scurry like that because a human was after him…..he stands up for himself….also when bills entered sookie’s house she said”your alive” and he replies “i know i fed”im pretty sure it was bill…..because he had no friendship with him…i dont even think he knew him…..hope that helps…

lame.
First I’d like to say a few people must have misunderstood because Terry is Andy’s cousin not son.
And second bill didn’t kill Lafayette (if he is dead) because he loves Sookie too much… Everything he has done for her was for the love he feels. And I can’t wait to see the growth of their relationship in second season.
I also want to learn more of sam now that we know we he acted so weird first season. Sam deserves a good girl that can bring in some tension for the main characters. Like in the first season Sookie didnt want Sam but she didnt like it when Tara had him so that would be interesting.
I hope they uphold there standards from first season to make it just as good or better. True blood is my favorite show by far. I also think they should
i cannot believe they killed Lafayette, he was my favorite character on the show, and i loved him in the 1st book, i haven’t gotten a hold of any of the others yet, i don’t know that i’ll be able to watch it with him gone, like i said he was by far my favorite, and i loved Rene to, even after i found out he was the killer from reading the book, i loved him on the show, the show is gonna take a serious down turn without lafayette there
Agreed.
They reeeeeallly need to rethink killing Lafayette in the tv show! Its just not very smart. He is one of the few characters that work. I really like Granny too. Who else is likeable? Rene and Amy were cool until they turned out to be psychos, and thats it. Suki, Bill, and Jason aren’t all that easy to care about. If they kill Lafayette that just leaves Sam and Terra. maybe Erick if they develop him more.
I think the social worker somehow profits by people misbehaving, and I don’t think she is working her ass off to learn to shift into a pig, that is plain dumb. Sorry, but it is. I think she probably turned that guitar playing guy into a pig because his name was eggs benedict, which is eggs and ham(pig). I think they were hinting around. Also “benedict” can mean someone who betrays you. Maybe the guitar playing guy(Eggs benedict) betrayed her and is currently enjoying life as a pig.
Hahaha. Funny about eggs and HAM. But you’re dead wrong about the clue (just the clue, I’m not sure about the theory). You obviously haven’t read the books.
There was an Egg Benedict in the book. But he was not a shape shifter, just a regular human. And neither did his name hint any relation to HAM.
Eggs in the book was Tara’s boyfriend and he died. He was no important character.
It is very clear. The new shape shifter in town (the one that cares for Tara and the one that Sam hates) has hurt Lafayette. She’s done it to isolate Tara. I doubt he will die (there will be a hospital episode). When Lafayette cringed from the oncomer that was Bill but he simply supplied Bill with True Blood and was attacked after that by the shape shifter.
My theory straight up was that the senator is actually a werewolf and got to lafayette but lafayette won’t be outta the show because he will appear normal but will now be a werewolf….??
That’s a stupid theory. Really. It’s way too early in the series to introduce a werewolf.
Why? Its not to early for anything except killing of Lafayette. he was the best character in that show
No,nope! No Bill or Eric or Quinn or Miss Jessica,,,,it’s desperate people done it,,,it’s entangle ‘dark political’ side…
wuhuu….
A lot of u r wrong. Lafayette was not killed, he was kidnapped by Eric. But Ecric let him go due to the deal he mad with Sookie.
I wanted to thank you for this excellent write up. I surely liked every little bit of it. I have you bookmarked and will be visting.
Well if some people read the books they will understand what this person is saying. I just don’t understand why they kept Lafayette in the show.
