What Is Valar Dohaeris? – From Game of Thrones

Everyone is getting pretty antsy about the March 31st first episode of Game of Thrones Season 3, in part because of the odd title “Valar Dohaeris.” Because of the speculation about the term we thought we’d answer the obvious question upfront:

“What does Valar Dohaeris mean?”

It means “All Men Must Serve.”

It’s the proper High Valyrian phrase you’d use if someone says “Valar Morghulis” to you, which means “All Men Must Die.” If you’ll remember, in the Game of Thrones Season 2 finale (which was ironically titled “Valar Morghulis”) Jaqen H’ghar gave Arya Stark a coin and a code phrase to use if she ever needed to find him. Here’s how that scene went:

Valar Morghulis
So, whenever Arya needs Jaqen H’ghar’s help and wants to find him, all she has to do is approach someone, present the coin and say:

Arya:“Valar Morghulis” –> All Men Must Die
Stranger:“Valar Dohaeris!” –> All Men Must Serve!

Valar Dohaeris – Season Three Launch
game of thrones, valar dohaerisGame of Thrones will soon be here! The first episode will be catching us up on several fronts at once:

  • We join Jon Snow as he finally meets the King Beyond the Wall. But it is no thanks to his brothers in arms, though. They have all fled south at this point and are back on the other side of that massive wall. What is Jon’s response to finally meeting him? We will soon find out.

  • We also get to return to King’s Landing to watch my favorite character in this show, Tyrion. I hear he is vying for a reward, though exactly what the reward is, I don’t know. But I bet it is gonna cost someone dearly!

  • And best of all, we get more of Daenerys and her dragons. She headed to Slavers Bay to seek a few good men. Well, more than a few from the trailer we see below. She is going to be a force in the upcoming season. In fact all the women will be coming into their own from the looks of things.

A Climactic Season Three
Show runners Weiss and Benioff have said that this is the season where it all comes together. It is the one they have been anticipating with the greatest interest. It is also the season with the biggest end of season climax. If it is bigger than Ned’s beheading in Season One and the appearance of the White Walkers in Season Two, then we are in for some climatic changes this season. I can hardly wait!

But if you want more than just words, we have a treat for you. For those who want a taste of what is to come this season – check out the latest trailer:
