War Is Waged in Baelor, Game Of Thrones Ep9

The battle begins in Game Of Thrones, pitching Starks vs. Lannisters. But of course, more than just the soldiers have their lives at stake . . . .
Here’s a recap of Baelor, Game Of Thrones Episode 9:
Varys (the eunuch who sits on the King’s council), brings Lord Stark something to drink. While there he tells Stark that his son Robb is marching south with an army. He also tells Stark that he wants peace and begs him to declare his allegiance to King Joffrey. He tells Stark that Cersei would probably let Stark live out his life as a member of the Night Watch.
Ned refuses to which Varys replies “what of your daughters my lord?” and leaves.
Robb Stark, accompanied by his mother, Catelyn Stark, has raised an army comprised of loyal men from the north; their mission: to march to King’s Landing and kill the Lannisters and free Lord Stark. In order to gain a strategic upper hand, they must cross between The Twins, two fortified castles with a bridge between them that crosses over the Trident river. To do so they’ll need the approval of Walder Frey, who’s played by David Bradley, the actor who stars as Argus Filch in the Harry Potter movies!
Catelyn Stark decides to ask Lord Frey for his assistance since he’s chief bannerman for House Tulley, Catelyn’s family. He agrees, but with three stipulations: 1) Robb must take his son Oliver as his personal squire; 2) Arya must marry his son Waldren when they both come of age; and 3) When the fighting is done, Robb must marry one of his daughters (whichever he chooses). I’m guessing the girls could probably be described as having “nice personalities.”
Maester to the Night’s Watch, Aemon tells Jon Snow that he’s the son of King Maekar I Targaryen, which means he’s a Targaryen! His real name is Aemon Targaryen.
Khal Drogo, recently wounded by one of his disloyal men, isn’t doing so well. His shoulder wound is festering from an infection. Ser Jorah, former knight to King Aerys, tells Daenerys to leave Khal Drogo since his death is certain. Daenerys refuses. His wife Daenerys Targeryn, decides to let him be tended by Mirri Maz Duur, a recent witch enslaved by the Dothraki. She tells Daenerys that she can save him with blood magic – but it will require a sacrifice.
The witch asks that Khal’s horse be brought into the tent – she then slaughters the horse, spilling buckets of blood on Khal. But here’s the rub: as the witch chants, strange sounds come from the tent. When one of Khal’s men tries to enter the tent Ser Jorah, who has donned his armor at Daenerys’ request, kills him.
As the strange sounds continue coming from the tent Daenerys goes into premature labor. The scene ends with Ser Jorah carrying Daenerys into Khal’s tent.
Tyrion Lannister is quite the ladies man. His buddy Sellsword Bronn brings him a woman and Tyrion woes her by telling her that if she stays with him he’ll promise her: 1) safety, 2) the pleasure of his company and 3) more gold than she can spend if she lived a thousand years. That sounds good to her so she agrees to stay with him. I like her – she’s intelligent and speaks her mind, something I’m assuming is attractive to Tyrion.
Later, she, Tyrion and Sellsword Bronn play a drinking game where they try to guess about each other’s past. The game reveals that Tyrion’s new lady friend didn’t come from a checkered past. Tyrion then tells the group a pretty tragic story about his wife.
The next morning, Tyrion is awakened by Bronn who tells him that he’s wanted at the front to fight. He rallies his ragtag group of mountain men who quite willingly rush off to do battle. As a matter of fact, they’re so enthusiastic that they knock Tyrion unconscious in their excitement. Yup, Tyrion missed the entire battle. Once again, he’s awaken by Bronn who tells him that they won their battle (which was against 2,000 Stark soldiers instead of the 20,000 they’d planned for).
Although Robb Stark’s men lost the first battle with the Lannisters, he’s successful in one respect: he captures Jaime Lannister! His victory is bittersweet though because 2,000 of his men were killed and he’s not yet freed his father and sisters.
Speaking of his sisters, little Arya Stark is roaming the streets hungry with nowhere to stay when she notices people rushing to the center square. When asked where they’re going she’s told that they’re going to see the Hand Of The King (her father). Sure enough, Lord Stark is brought out in chains. He sees Arya crouching at the foot of a statue of Baelor. He sees one of his men and yells “Baelor”. He then climbs to the top of the steps where Queen Cersei, King Joffrey and his oldest daughter Sansa stand. Turning to the crowd he declares his treason (which is untrue of course) and declares King Joffrey the true heir to the throne.
King Joffrey tells the crowd that his mother asked him to let Lord Stark go to the Night’s Watch and that Sansa begged him to spare her father’s life. But then, the sadistic [expletive deleted] tells the crowd that since they’re women, they’re soft. He tells the crowd that as their king he’ll never allow treason in his kingdom. He then orders the beheading of Lord Stark, much to the surprise of his mother, as well as Arya and Sansa.
As the episode ends, Lord Stark dies.
Yes, Lord Stark is dead and although I knew this was eventually coming but I must admit I’m still sad. Sean Bean was a superb Lord Eddard Stark.
The stakes in the Game Of Thrones just got higher.
I dont think Maester Aemon is the son of the Mad King, he’s much too old. He’s Aegon’s brother, I dont know how it all shakes out but he’s a great uncle to Daenarys. Maybe theyll meet up down the road.
Nevi:
Got it. Looks like he’s the son of King Maekar I Targaryen, which I’ve noted in the recap.
Thanks!
