Review: Twilight’s Dawn from author Anne Bishop is an intriguing collection of four separate novellas. The stories are all set in the backdrop of the Black Jewels universe. Clearly, this one is for the Black Jewels fans. If you’re new to the series, I’d suggest you start at the beginning.
The first story in the book titled ‘Winsol Gifts’ is a sensual love story in the SaDiablo family. The story revolves mostly around the family’s everyday life. Chronologically, this is the first story after ‘Tangled Webs.’ The Black-Jeweled Warlord Prince of Dhelan Daemon Sadi is getting ready to celebrate his first wedding anniversary with his new bride Jaenelle the Witch Queen. As the celebration draws near Daemon finds himself being pulled in more directions than he can handle. Those that love Bishop’s characters will surely enjoy reading this one!
The second story in the book titled ‘Shades of Honor’ mostly deals with the legacy of ‘Tangled Webs.’ Honoring the orders of Prince Lucivar, Surreal returns to Ebon Rih still getting over the events that left her angry and wounded. Surreal may just give in to the darkness that’s growing inside of her. The novella also tells the story of what happens to Falonar.
The third novella titled ‘Family,’ describes a vicious attack on Queen Sylvia and her sons and this completely disrupts the ruling family. They need to uncover the identity of the warlord known only as No Face, before he returns to complete the task. The story sure brought tears to my eyes.
The last story is titled ‘The High Lord’s Daughter’, which is my favorite story in the anthology. The story is set considerably in the future and the events that are described are after the deaths of two of Bishop’s main characters. The death of the characters sure came as a shock to me… and had me all welled up! I’d hate to ruin that for you, so I’m going to leave out the names of the characters. However moving, the readers are forced to move on with the remaining characters. You see new romances sprouting and new children being born, including the high lord’s very special daughter. Twilight’s Dawn is sure to keep fans satisfied!
