I disagree with #2…. Sam wasn’t paying a tribute to Maryann. He doesn’t even know what she is. He was returning the money he stole from her when they had first met and he broke into her house. I know the books talk all about what Maryann is and what she wants. I have not read the books.

not only before,but also after when he commented that the person who was doing his hair (her name escapes me) was going to kill him for getting blood in his hair. To repair the damage, she had to cut his hair, which is later brought to attention by Bill in the clothing store.
