There’s Something About Amy: New True Blood Cast Member

Amy BurleyIn True Blood Episode 7 Burning House of Love Jason Stackhouse meets a mysterious young lady at Fangtasia, the vampire bar that Eric Northman owns in Shreveport. She comes to Jason’s rescue when he approaches a vampire bartender about obtaining vampire blood.

Meet Amy Burley (portrayed by Lizzy Caplan), the newest cast member of True Blood.

Amy lures Jason away from the bar by telling him she has a stash of “V” that she’ll share with him. They make their way back to Jason’s place where Amy explains that V comes from the earth and is “nature’s greatest gift.” She makes a big production out of grinding two drops of vampire blood with aspirin; what should be a simple process turns into something ritualistic. She then prays over the substance, gives thanks to the earth from which it came, and snorts a line of the powder up her nose. Jason follows suit.

From here, things get weird.

What follows is reminiscent of a Cheech and Chong movie. We hear birds chirping and see fuzzy psychedelic images of Jason and Amy. Everything seems to move in slow motion. When they touch one another, multi-colored sparkles appear in the air between them.

So who is this Amy Burley anyway?

Here are a few excerpts about Amy from the Charlaine Harris book Dead Until Dark. We never “see” Amy in the book, she’s simply referenced a few times:

According to HBO: “this season Lizzy Caplan (Amy) will return to television with a strong recurring role in Alan Ball’s new HBO series True Blood.” So, unlike what happens in the book, it sounds like we’ll see more of her new age character this season.

Here are some questions I have about Amy Burley:

  1. Was Amy simply in the right place at the right time for Jason’s rescue or was it more of a planned event? Was Amy waiting for Jason or just any poor sucker looking for V?

  2. How many women walk around with a mortar and pestle in their handbags? Hmmn. Perhaps a witch that needs to whip up a quick eye of newt souffle?

  3. What were those Lucky Charms type sparkles that appeared between Jason and Amy whenever they touched one another?

Want to know what I think? I think she’s a magical character with a dark, evil side side. I think she’ll turn on Jason if provoked and show her true nature. I believe she’ll play a prominent role in the series because I predict she’ll eventually get a waitress job at Merlotte’s and pique Sam’s interest, thereby making Tara jealous. This might be the catalyst that makes Tara visit the voodoo doctor who correctly guessed that Tara has intimacy issues with men. Hmmn, this could get interesting.

If she’s really a magical creature Sookie should be able to determine her otherworldly qualities by probing her mind.

Overall, I think Amy is on a mission with a hidden agenda that could harm Jason and other townspeople. Of course, I could be wrong.

Let’s watch her closely during the next episode . . . .

  1. [...] Amy’s willing to pursue even more dangerous options to obtain the substance. In my review of True Blood Episode 7 I predicted that there was a darker side to Amy. We’re seeing that [...]

I think Amy is a serial killer who gets off on murdering vampires. She’s a really scary character!

I agree that there’s probably more to her than meets the eye. On the one hand, when she talks to Sookie about her relationship with Jason she seems pretty grounded and down-to-earth. On the other hand she’s pretty ruthless when it comes to dealing with vampires, which is extremely dangerous.

      I wonder if she’ll make it past the first season . . . .
