Genre: Paranormal
The Lipstick Killerz is Dez Del Rio’s debut novel. I have always been a little skeptical about first novels; they somehow never meet the standard. I went ahead and picked it up anyway after I learned that the book was inspired by a true story (I’ve always been a sucker for true stories!) and I must say I wasn’t disappointed at all!
The story begins with Sophia (our central character), a teenager who is fanatical about vampirism, manages to resurrect a not-so-famous yet influential historical figure Mary Ellen Pleasant; she was also infamously known as one of the most powerful Voodoo Queens in the history of San Francisco.
Here’s a brief overview of the novel:
“The year is 1986 and the satanic panic scare of the nineteen eighties is at a shrilling crescendo. For the past thirty years, society has gone through a pandemic of changes away from religion and Christian morality. All over the country parents, teachers and clergy are searching for answers and desperate to find a solution to this unholy dilemma.
San Francisco, one of the most influential cities in the world and to a large extent the originator of these changes has been hit hardest, becoming a mecca for Satan worshipers, serial killers, witchcraft and freaks.
The city is in a panic, and desperate for a solution to its ungodly plight. The Mayor, in a last-ditch attempt to save the city, has called in a specialist; Enter Special Agent Detective Sam Anders of the FBI, occult cop extraordinaire. Together with Sophia, and her best friend Sylvain, he must find a way to stop the bloodiest crime spree in the cities’ history.”
Del Rio has sure done a great job at combining several different genres in one book. Whether you’re a fan of Vampire fiction, horror stories or suspense and mystery you’ll find it here. Del Rio has masterfully blended historical facts together with an exciting fictional story. In all, I think The Lipstick Killerz by Dez Del Rio is an exciting and satisfying read. Thumbs-up!
