A Match Made In Hell by Terri GareyA Match Made in Hell, a novel by Terri Garey, is the second in a series of urban fantasy books that describe the life and adventures of Nicki Styx, the owner of a haute couture thrift shop who, after having a near death experience, can now “see dead people”. The fact that the doctor who saved her life, Joe Bascombe, wants to start a serious relationship with her only adds complexity to an already complicated life.

The story starts out with Nicki being visited by a female ghost named Lila who’s desperate to find her daughter. You see, although Lila is now dead, her daughter Kelly is still alive (barely) and trapped at the scene of the car accident that killed Lila. Time is of the essence of course because it’s unknown how long her daughter can survive being seriously injured and trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

Nicki does find the girl but there’s a twist: Kelly (the girl trapped in the car) is Joe’s ex-wife and Nicki’s long-lost twin sister. And the ghost Lila is actually Nicki’s biological mother.

Say what?

Okay, don’t worry. Terri Garey writes in an easy-to-follow style that makes this moderately complex storyline flow seamlessly!

As the two sisters work to acquaint themselves with one another and explore the mysteries surrounding their past, Nicki has to deal with her feelings about Joe’s previous relationship with her twin sister. Imagine having a boyfriend that was once married to your twin sister – think of the problems that could present. On top of that, a demon named Sammy has started stalking her. Okay, he’s not bad on the eyes (he looks like Billy Idol), he quotes classic literature, and he can be charismatic. They might have possibilities as a couple if he just wasn’t so damned intent on stealing her soul!

Terry Garey has given us a great story with strong characters that pull you in and make you feel like you’re experiencing the story with them. The scenes between Nicki and Sammy are great fun and keep you looking forward to their next run-in. Additionally, the book’s dialogue and characterizations are very realistic - never strained or contrived. As such I found myself identifying with more than one character in this book.

So:

• Will Nicki and Kelly find answers to the questions about their past?

• Will Joe have trouble staying with only one twin?

• Is Sammy what he claims to be?

• Will I lose 10 lbs. by my birthday? Okay, even I don’t know this answer.

Read “A Match Made In Hell” to get answers to the rest of the questions - you’re going to love how it all turns out!

On The Edge by Ilona AndrewsAwesome, awesome, awesome….sorry, but I get repetitive when I am reviewing a fantasy book that I really loved. And, Ilona Andrews’ On the Edge is one of those books. It’s a great story of a strong woman who will do anything to protect her brothers, but – as often happens in life – things happen that are out of her control. And that’s when a mysterious warrior from another land arrives, ostensibly to help her but to her, he’s an enemy, even if she needs his help to survive.

Rose Drayton and her brothers, Jack and Georgie, live in a land called “the Edge”. It’s an area between the human world (the Broken) and the magical world (the Weird). “Edgers” live a hard-scrabble existence with no law and little money and they often take low-paying jobs in the Broken to make ends meet. Rose cleans offices in the Broken and raises her brothers in the Edge. However, she’s a very special (and hunted) Edger because she has the magical ability to “flash white” – an ability that makes her highly pursued by bluebloods from the Weird.

The story starts with Rose and her brothers scraping by, living their simple lives. Out of the blue, they are suddenly attacked in their home by magical creatures that thrive on killing and eating magic. The family is saved when an annoyingly handsome blueblood warrior from the Weird, Declan Camarine, shows up; he states that he is there to marry Rose and take her back to his kingdom. You should know that heirs that can flash white are held in high esteem by Bluebloods. So of course, Rose wants nothing to do with Declan - who wants to be a brood mare for some rich elitist nobleman?

Ilona Andrews has given us a wonderful story with outstanding dialogue in the exchanges between Declan and Rose. Rose stays strong but is constantly fighting her attraction to Declan. She knows he’s hiding something and she refuses to trust him – no matter how many times he saves her brothers from the horrid magic eaters. The back and forth dialogue between Rose and Declan is exceedingly well done; I could NOT put this book down. It was New Year’s Eve, we had friends over, and there I was, hiding away trying to finish this book and find out if Rose ever gives in and trusts Declan. Read the book to find out what happens. On The Edge is a masterfully written fantasy romance book. I cannot recommend it enough.

On The Edge is available from local and online booksellers.

The prestigious role of Pythia, establishes Cassandra Palmer as the most powerful psychic the world has to offer. It doesn’t seem to matter to anyone that Cassie didn’t want the titled responsibility; nor does her new power deter her potential assassins from plotting her death. Case in point: the mages of the Silver Circle want her dead because they can’t control her. They would have preferred the role of Pythia be given to someone more easily manipulated.

As such Cassie has to defend her life all the while trying to navigate the waters of How To Be A Pythia 101. Her predecessor’s untimely death has left her in the dark about her new duties and without any details about her new job. Details that would come in handy considering the substantial opposition she faces.

To add fuel to the already burgeoning flame there is an all powerful ancient evil that is intent on ushering in death and destruction that will take most of Cassie’s own uncertain powers to fight the impending doom. Fortunately she has some very influential and powerful friends: John Pritkin is a highly skilled war-mage with a wild side and a solid weapons background; Mircea is as deadly as he is handsome and debonair and belongs to the formidable Vampire Senate. With their help Cassandra may live to see another day.

Curse The Dawn starts off with immediate action when an on-the-job training session evolves into a dangerous gunfight. It isn’t much later that Cassie is brought into negotiations that once again put her life in peril and produces the biggest magical catastrophe in centuries. The drama in Cassie’s life never seems to let up and chaos, intrigue, and full out battles ensue. This book is the fourth in the Cassie Palmer vampire books series and it lives up to its predecessors as an energetic and highly entertaining read. Curse The Dawn has everything a good action fantasy should have; gunfights, explosions, high drama and in house magical temper tantrums.

The chemistry that Cassie has with John and Mircea propels the book along at a perfect speed. The readers really get a sense of what motivates the characters and will readily invest in their lives. The plot is ripe with underlying tensions and an intricate supernatural world. Fans of the genre and of Karen Chance will be satisfied with the action and energy Curse The Dawn delivers. Curse The Dawn is a hard book to put down and one that will leave the readers wanting more.

Blood Kin by Maria LimaI love it when the sequel to a book I love comes out and it is better than you expected. That’s exactly what happened with Maria Lima’s newest installment “Blood Kin“, in the Blood Line series. I have commented before on the infinite possibilities that Keira Kelly presents as she is going through her transformation (see Blood Bargain), but in this newest book, her change is finished and the possibilities are still infinite as she discovers that she has a conglomeration of all abilities wrapped up into one. She can be anything from shape shifter to weather witch.

The Story:

Keira is heir to the kingdom of the Kelly Clan. Keira doesn’t necessarily consider this a “perk” since her newfound abilities (and title) have caused her great-grandmother Gigi to order her to return to the family homestead in Canada. It’s not too tough of a gig though since she’ll be living in the lap of luxury.
However Keira’s a bit downhearted because her best friend Bea won’t speak to her after a decision Keira had to make to save her cousin’s life. And her lover Adam flatly refuses to go with her to Canada.

So when the day arrives to leave in her private Lear jet (now that’s a real perk) only her brother Tucker, his boyfriend Niko, and her cousin Daffyd are there to accompany her. Both Adam and Bea are no shows.

It’s at this point that Keira decides that although she may be the heir to a powerful kingdom, she wants her life in Texas to stay as is; she plans to come back home as soon as possible. Those plans are quickly put on hold when her plan is diverted to Vancouver due to bad weather and her cousin Daffyd mysteriously disappears. On top of that homeless people are dying and no one quite knows why. When all is said and done Keira will have to confront murder, lies and revelations from the dark world before her dream of going home can be realized.

This latest Keira Kelly book by Maria Lima snares the reader’s attention early on with an intriguing story line and provides a steady stream of mystery at every turn. Maria Lima certainly knows how to keep her readers begging for more. I know I am.

Playing With FireJust when I thought that I had read at least one book containing every type of supernatural being that an author’s imagination could create, I find a new book with a great new storyline. Playing with Fire (Silver Dragons, Book 1) by Katie MacAlister is a great new other-earthly fantasy romance series that you will really enjoy. The main character, May Northcott, is a doppelganger created by a water nymph named Cyrene. May is Cyrene’s exact twin in all ways except she’s not a water nymph. However, she can slip into the shadow world and go past barriers that other beings can’t get through.

All of this was orchestrated by none other than Cyrene herself; she’s the one who decided to make a copy of herself. Why? So she could be a better thief. Yes, Cyrene created May so she could do a better job stealing things.

Of course, in order to do this, Cyrene had to summon a demon lord and give up one of her personality traits; the crazy girl ended up giving up her common sense! Had she not sacrificed this trait she might have realized that Magoth, the demon lord, planned to bind May to him as a slave forever. Yes, Magoth was ecstatic to get a thief bound to him who could retrieve some of the items needed to ensure his return to earth. He also wants to persuade (and seduce) May into being a slave to other (ahem) things. Alas, since Magoth is pretty good looking, May finds it hard to resist him.

So May becomes a thief for Magoth and we enter the story when May is trying to rob an important essence from a powerful mage and, by accident, ends up robbing him of his most powerful essence, which he’ll do anything to get back. He hires every bounty hunter available to find her which puts May on the run. She actually wants to return the essence in the hopes that he’ll drop the chase for her.

However Magoth has no sympathy for her situation and immediately sends her out on another mission. This time she’s not so successful. Or maybe she is.

You see, May gets caught by a dragon, and not just any dragon. She gets caught by Gabriel, an extremely handsome and sexy silver dragon ruler. He and the other silver dragons in his sept (think pack) are trying to find an important dragon relic. When he realizes he’s captured a thief he knows exactly how to use her; he’ll have her find and steal back the relic.

However his plan backfires a bit because the minute he touches her, he’s consumed with desire. Gabriel soon realizes that May is his life mate, someone who he can touch without causing them to burn. Oh, one thing about the dragons in this book; they have 2 forms, a human form (a gorgeous human form) and their animal/dragon form. For convenience purposes dragons default to their human forms.

Okay, let’s recap the problems that May is now facing:

  • she’s got to figure out a way to gain her freedom from Magoth;
  • she needs to avoid the bounty hunters who’re tracking her;
  • she needs to prevent Gabriel (who she really likes) from burning everyone and everything that he believes poses a threat to her;
  • she needs to save her “no common sense” twin Ceylon from blackmailers.

As you can imagine there’s a ton of action in this book. Not to mention the really hot sex between May and Gabriel. Additionally, the relationship between May and her twin Ceylon is entertaining and funny to read about. Together they don’t let anyone get the best of them; they also have a witty answer for every situation they encounter. In summation, this book has something for everyone: action, sex, adventure, sex, suspense, sex, and oh yeah, hot sex.

The end of the novel left me hanging so I’m thrilled to know that Katie MacAlister has the sequel already out, ready for my next visit to Amazon. And ready for me to purchase both books for the holiday for a friend of mine!

Dancing With WerewolvesYou know that feeling you get as you meander down the aisles of the bookstore looking for something good to read? You wander through the store hoping you’ll find a new book “gem” that makes you happy as you read it because it meets all your needs for excitement, romance, and action. Well, Dancing with Werewolves did it for me. It caught my eye on the shelf and I went for it. I was not disappointed. A as a matter of fact I loved it!

This is Carole Nelson Douglas’ first paranormal investigator novel and she has found a total fan in me.
The book starts out with paranormal investigator Delilah Street, a woman working in Kansas as a “weird phenomenon” TV reporter who’s unhappy with her job. The book takes place just after the millennium, which brought into reality all the myths and legends that have had previously only been described in books and movies, i.e., vampires, werewolves, crop circles, aliens, etc. If you could imagine it it’s probably real. And unfortunately for Delilah, her distinctive combination of white skin, brilliant blue eyes and black hair is an unintentional draw for those pesky vampires.

When Delilah sees a CSI-like TV program that shows a carbon copy of her body lying on the floor as a nude murder victim, she decides it’s time to leave her crappy job in Kansas, pack up, and find the producer of that crime show. Since Delilah is an orphan, the lure of the possibility that she might have some real family is irresistible. This is how she ends up in Las Vegas which happens to be a major gathering spot for all kinds of new millenium creatures. In her efforts to find her doppelganger, Delilah meets an entertaining cast of characters including the sleazy, filthy-rich producer of the true crime show, Hector Nightwine and Howard Hughes. Yes, Howard Hughes - did we ever see a body in 1976?

Two other central characters in the book are Ric Montoya, a handsome human hunk who has the ability to raise zombies, and Snow, an albino rock star, casino owner, potential vampire, potential demon, and totally unknown quantity. The mystery in the story starts when Ric and Delilah discover the bones of a pair of murdered lovers in the park. Delilah makes a personal vow to investigate their story and give them a proper burial while also looking for her mysterious “twin.”

If you like a fast-paced story that has a strong woman owning her ability to manage herself and the men in her life, read this book. Carole Nelson Douglas does a fantastic job balancing action, mystery, and romance. She’s written a book with believable characters that you’re sure to like. Dancing With Werewolves has earned its rightful place in the urban fantasy genre. I’m sure it will become one of your “must have” fantasy books.
