The Vampire Diaries Book 1- The Awakening by LJ SmithTitle: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: August 25, 2009 (re-release)
Pages: 272
Genre: Young Adult Vampire

The first installment in an excellent young adult vampire series, The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening, delivers an exciting take on the vampire genre. Elena is a beautiful student who is the queen of the high school – no one can touch her popularity. She can have anything she wants.

But, she’s not mean about it – she simply knows that she is one of the special people. So, when a new boy comes to school and he is completely immune to her charms, Elena is totally stumped. How dare he act like she doesn’t exist? How dare he snub her when she tries to introduce herself? All her angst goes into her diary which chronicles her plans to triumph over this arrogant boy.

Little does she know, the new guy, Stefan Salvatore, is very much aware of Elena but he’s doing his best to dissuade her from any involvement with him. That’s because Stefan is a dangerous individual and he knows how close he is to losing control around the beautiful, spirited Elena. However, he’s underestimated Elena – she has made it her personal mission to win him over. And, like all dangerous attractions, Stefan can’t resist her and they fall in love. Everything should be fine now, right? No, not really, because there are a couple of problems – he’s a vampire, he’s got lots of secrets, and one of his darkest secrets has shown up in Fells Church and it wants Elena too.

I have to admit, I’ve been watching the Vampire Diaries TV show and was instantly trying to compare the book to the show. But, after about twenty pages, it because apparent that the characters in the book are quite different from the tv storyline. Elena has a definite, unique personality of her own. With Stefan, you get a better understanding of why he is so sad and withdrawn. Damon, Stefan’s brother, is just a bad, bad man. I really liked this book and immediately dove into the next one upon finishing The Awakening. L. J. Smith has a crisp writing style that keeps you fully focused on the story and it’s given me a true craving for the Vampire Diaries series of books.

Secret Circle Season 1 Episode 1Finally, the night we have all been waiting for is here! I have been hearing stories about this show and writing up whatever I can find for the last few months, ever since we heard that there would be a television show based on L.J. Smith’s best-selling books. But I was not prepared for how awesome looking the cast would be once you see them in action! This is going to be a very fun show to watch.

The intro piece was great, nice and mysterious to set up the tone of the whole show. Once Cassie is finally in Chance Harbor we get a good look at the gal who just may be my favorite bad girl so far this season on TV, the beautiful and dangerous Faye. And then, no sooner do we scoot our little Cassie into town then, WAM, we see this mysterious and gorgeous hunky body checking Cassie out through the neighbor’s window. All you can think is – hope this guy is a regular!

Cassie the Orphan

Soon more strange things are happening as poor orphaned Cassie (did we mention her Mom was killed in the first five minutes of the show?) goes to school and it turns out the principle was one of her Mom’s BFFs! How often does that happen in your life? But hey- this is television so we go with the flow and wait to see what other strange and mysterious happenings will pop up. Soon the mysterious hottie, Nick, is seen hanging and talking about Cassie to Adam, who we know from the sincere and quiet smile is going to be the “nice guy” of the show. But we got good with that in True Blood, this is a dynamic that is always fun to watch, so I am looking forward to seeing these two battle it out for the heart of Cassie.

It’s funny how you just know that Faye is going to be trouble when she enters the scene. All she says is “So you’re the new girl.” And added “You’re very pretty,” and you just knew this was trouble. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of danger she puts our Cassie in. See – already I am feeling protective about Cassie and I just met her!

Burn Baby Burn

Secret Circle Season 1 Episode 1But by far the best scene in the show was when the bitchy Faye decides that Cassie needs some testing to see just how powerful a witch she is by setting her car on fire. Of course, Adam comes to the rescue, we get a chance to see he has powers too, and of course to put Cassie in his arms. Ah Faye, don’t you know you just aren’t going to win this one?

Of course, the circle and its destiny is revealed, to us at least, when Diana goes to Faye’s house to confront her on the bad choice of pyrotechnics. But girls will be girls, they get in a bit of a tiff and we begin to see the pecking order in this group a bit more clearly. And when Aunt Jane and the principle talk about “the trouble returning” again, you just get this big “uh-oh” feeling like even more stuff is going on then you think. Scary stuff for our little Cassie, at any rate.

Strange Houses and Stranger Magic

I have to admit that if it were me and someone I barely knew wanted me to go out in the woods to a strange little house with a bunch of her friends, I would not be thinking they were planning a tea party. So you just want to yell at the screen (which I did) “don’t go Cassie!” when she heads out with Diana to the old creepy house in the woods. Even if you think Diana is the one cool chick, I still wouldn’t have gone. Good thing it was Cassie and not me or we would not have found out about the six families of witches and the destinies written in the family books and all. No wonder Cassie freaks out and runs. And that is a good thing too or Adam wouldn’t have a chance to be in the woods with her. And then we would have never gotten my absolutely top favorite scene in the show where they work magic together and all the drops of water dance around them like little pieces of – well magic! Ah – that was great. And they almost kissed! Adam and Cassie, I mean, not the droplets of water.

But Cassie is still a bit freaked so she has to go around asking more questions and getting a better picture of who everyone is. Of course Diana is I the middle of telling the story of how everyone’s parents died who is in the Secret Circle when Faye shows up and creates a huge storm that just has to get out of control. A great metaphor for our favorite outta control witch. When Cassie tamps it out with barely a thought, it is time to acknowledge she is a witch, and a great one.

A Secret Revealed

There is all kinds of behind the scenes revelations sorta about who is the bad guys and who to get worried about, and then Cassie goes home. Since her home is actually the house where her Mother grew up, it isn’t that surprising that it hides a few secrets. So Cassie has the secret book reveled to her, which is cool because you know she is going to need all the help she can get!

Meanwhile – the bad dude Charlie and the high school principle Dawn seem to be up to no good together. I guess we find out more about them next week!

Can’t wait to see more stuff- and maybe even some serious kissing this time!

Secret Circle S1 Ep4 Moves Forward

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Secret Circle, Season 1 Episode 4 Well things just got very hot and heavy this week with Secret Circle. Chance Harbor is kinda a creepy place, but then we knew that. Ever since Zach told Cassie the big bad secret about her mom, Cassie has been on a crusade to learn the truth. Well, heck! If some guy told me that my mom was a witch, I would want to know just what he meant too!

So Cassie is of on anther adventure, with Adam along (What, for good luck?) to find out what Zach is talking about regarding his sister Heather. Of course, no sooner do they show up at Heather’s bro’s shack then –Bam- we find Heather. Seems she has been sitting in this chair for 16 years, and no one thought to look in her brother’s shack until Cassie. Can you blame Cassie and Adam for booting it outta there when Heather suddenly comes out of it and lunges at them? Lucky for them that Cassie has that Book of Shadows to tell her that the mark on Heather is some kind of spell to control Heather. So now Cassie has a way to control Heather and find out more about her mom.

Okay – this is where I begin to feel like the writers are just trying to shove way too much into one episode. If that was all that happened, I would have felt good episode. The whole rest of the show was just Cassie showing us she is not happy with blood and needles (like- who is?) and the revelation that Cassie has actually accidentally released a demon could have been done any other way. So we introduce the character of Heather, make her possessed, she tells Cassie pretty much nothing and then WAM is hit by a car and is dead. They could not have found another way to introduce this demon to Mellissa?

All in all, it was an okay episode but I felt that they need to find a way to create characters we care about if they are going to kill them off. So if you introduce a new character that has links to Cassie’s mom, why not have her around for a few episodes, have us care one way or the other about her, and then kill her off? Is this bugging anyone else? No probs with the rest of the show, but this really is annoying to me and just plain lazy writing.

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey NiffeneggerTitle: Her Fearful Symmetry
Author: Audrey Niffenegger
Release Date: September 29, 2010
Pages: 406
Genre: Epic Fantasy
Best Book Quote: She felt as though her soul were attempting to climb out by way of her esophagus.

In Her Fearful Symmetry, author Audrey Niffenegger has penned a story that exceeds the already-high expectations set by her blockbuster 2003 debut novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife.

After the untimely death of their Aunt Elspeth from cancer, a pair of twin sisters—Julia and Valentina Poole—inherit Elspeth’s London apartment. The gift comes with some strange strings attached, including a requirement that the sisters live in the apartment for a year before selling it.

As soon as they’re ensconced in Elspeth’s flat overlooking Highgate Cemetery, Julia and Valentina get to know the neighborhood. Their neighbors include a number of oddballs, including Elspeth’s lover, Robert. As a tour guide who is writing a scholarly paper about Highgate, Robert knows everything there is to know about the cemetery—including its secrets. As the story unfolds, spirits of the dead make occasional comeback appearances, which means that Aunt Elspeth may not be gone for good.

Partly a ghost story, partly a tale about the intensity of twin sister relationships, Her Fearful Symmetry is a complex novel. Highgate Cemetery is a real burial site that opened outside London in 1839; the way Niffenegger evokes the cemetery’s atmosphere is one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. The cemetery seems to hover over the characters, oppressing them with its brooding, supernatural presence. Questions are raised: Will Elspeth’s human spirit ultimately be released? Or will her psyche be held earthbound, where it will become frustrated, and fester?

If you enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Wife, you’re certain to fall in love with Her Fearful Symmetry. By any literary measure, this is an extremely readable, compelling book.

Stripped by Marcia Colette

Title: Stripped
Author: Marcia Colette
Release Date: June 1, 2010
Pages: 304
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Someone wants their perfect weapon back, only she’s not coming quietly.

Alexa Wells wants her life back. She’s just not sure what that life was. The memories inside her head—a stripper’s—aren’t hers, and before she humiliates herself onstage one more time, she sets out to collect the scattered pieces of her mind. The trail leads to Boston, charges of identity theft and murder, and the real bombshell: a forgotten werewolf lover who insists she’s a werewolf hybrid.

Matt York doesn’t care that she looks at him like he’s been smoking crack between court cases. Now that he has her back he’s not about to let her go it alone, even if she can easily kick ass and take names all by herself. Amnesia only scratches the surface of her problems, and like it or not, she’s stuck with him.

She’s also stuck with Robert Gamboldt, a venture capitalist who’s not above murdering his way to the top. He’s not about to lose his prize possession without playing dirty. It’s a simple enough offer. Be his personal assassin, or go to jail.

With options like that, it’s enough to make a hybrid go full-blood.

Warning: Delicious sexual tension with a werewolf who’ll wait as long as it takes for his hybrid werewolf mate to come around.
