Trick Of The Light by Rob ThurmanTitle: Trick of the Light
Author: Rob Thurman
Release Date: September 1, 2009
Pages: 352
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Best Book Quote: What you can do with a knife you can just as easily do with the heel of a three- inch boot with just a little more pressure.

My favorite quote pretty much sums up Trixa, the tough-as-nails female lead in Trick of the Light, Book 1 in Rob Thurman’s “Trickster” series.

Trick of Light is the gritty and oftentimes raunchy tale of an information dealer named Trixa Iktomi. She’s a bar owner who tracks down demons in her spare time with her assistants Zeke and Griffin. And in a town like Las Vegas, there are lots of demons to go around. In Trixa’s world demons are sneaky, conniving beings who mask themselves into incredibly sexy beings that make real humans swoon from their attention. This is a necessary trait since a demon’s ultimate goal is to get an innocent to sell his soul. So it’s up to Trixa and her crew to make sure no demon gets that chance.

This installment in the series centers around a piece of information that Trixa received in a previous novel from a dying demon who whispered something to her about -the Light of Life – a shield that will protect heaven or hell from an otherworldly attack. Trixa knows that having this weapon will give her an unimaginable amount of power, and also let her get revenge on the demon that killed her brother. With Trixa Rob Thurman creates a strong female lead who knows what she wants and is not shy about going after it. Thurman’s use of dry humor and sarcasm kept me laughing in a story that has some pretty serious stuff going on. As you read through this story you might find it a little hard to connect with Trixa and her sarcasm because we all know it’s difficult to remember to say something witty every time you open your mouth, but just remember that this is a supernatural fantasy. With endless action and lively banter between the characters, I think Trick of the Light will keep you fully entertained.

So, what’s a good witch supposed to do?

She decides to give Griffin a little “push” in the right direction.

With the help of Lily’s extremely intelligent dog and a potion of adoration, Griffin not only gets a little nudge in the right direction, he gets bulldozed – he literally cannot get enough of Lily. Ever heard of too much a good thing? Well, Lily is just beginning to understand this particular problem when love knocks at her door and she realizes that small changes can lead to big consequences.

This titillating supernatural romance will leave you breathless and very glad no one else is in the room while you’re reading it. The sexual chemistry between Griffin and Lily starts on page one and never lets up. Vicki Lewis Thompson has one heck of an imagination, especially in the bedroom. While reading the book I kept thinking – how can they keep doing that? Have I ever done that? Hmmn, maybe I should try that . . .c

One thing is for sure, after reading this provocative and captivating novel, sleeping will be the last thing on your mind.

I’m off to find my hubby . .

Masked by Moonlight by Nancy GideonDo you like books that have a strong woman battling wits with a sexy bad-boy villain? If so, tighten your belt because you’re in for an exhilarating ride because Masked by Moonlight by Nancy Gideon fits the bill!

Meet New Orleans detective Charlotte Caissie who is doggedly pursuing an underworld crime boss implicated in lots of murders – including her father’s. Each time she visits the evil crime lord, Jimmy Legere, Charlotte is confronted by his bodyguard, Max Savoie, and his constant sexy, but a bit belittling, regard for her. Although Max is always polite to him and tolerant when he comes on to her, she senses something deep inside him that’s always teetering on the edge and about to lose control. Even worse she can’t understand why she’d drawn to him – a man that’s the hired killer for a New Orleans crime lord.

As Charlotte and Max dance around their attraction to each other, they’re inevitably pulled together when he saves her from a vicious attempt on her life. And that’s when she starts to suspect that there’s something not quite right about Mr. Max Savoie. Her attackers are savagely killed– how could a mere man do that?

Nancy Gideon gives us two very strong characters that constantly fight to maintain their independence – a characteristic that pulled me further into their story. One the one hand there’s Charlotte who has a sad and ugly history to overcome, something that causes her to carry baggage into every relationship. Then there’s Max who was adopted at an early age by a crook and knows nothing about life except what exists in the criminal world.

Until he meets Charlotte.

Kudos to the author for giving us a new spin on the good vs. evil tale. Her rendition of how a cop and a villain fight their attraction and the inherent obstacles around them kept me glued to every page. If you like strong women and hot men overcoming complicated life situations then you’ll love Masked by Moonlight.

Torn by Julie KennerTorn by Julie Kenner is Book 2 in the Blood Lily Chronicles. The series has an extremely unique heroine who has learned to accept the fact that she is the “prophecy girl” – the person who has the answers to everyone’s questions about the future. In the first book, Lily Carlyle spent all her time working toward the goal of saving the Earth – only to find out she was duped by her demon handler. In Book Two, Lily (understandably) has major anger issues. She now knows she’s been working FOR the demons instead of against them. So, she devises a plan for revenge: become a double agent and take down the demons who tricked her.

But as with most things, things aren’t as black and white as they appear. Case in point, there are good demons as well as bad ones: Lily has a tenuous relationship with Deacon Camphire but a bona fide hateful one with another demon, Lucas, who recently invaded her sister Rose’s body. Keeping herself from accidentally killing her sister while she interacts with Lucas becomes one of Lily’s biggest challenges. She’s a tough, no nonsense heroine that will do anything to keep her sister safe.

As a double agent, Lily has to play many different roles to keep up her charade. Julie Kenner delivers a powerful story about a woman who has many difficult decisions to make and writes it in a way that has you rooting for her the whole way, hoping she makes the right ones. While it’s easy to pick up and follow the storyline in Torn I also recommend reading the first book, Tainted, to get a real feel for how intense Lily’s anger is at the betrayal she suffered. And knowing the full storyline helps make the revenge – and there will be revenge – oh so sweet!

Julie Kenner creates a dark and believable fantasy world where the thrills of Lily’s subterfuge keep you engaged from page one.

Dogs and GoddessesThe multi-author novel, Dogs and Goddesses, breaks the mold of the typical anthology offering. Yes, it is written by three different authors – Jennifer Cruise, Anne Stuart and Lani Diane Rich – but instead of three separate stories, you’ve got one story with three distinct female leads with each lead having her own unique life story and romantic interest. The authors do an excellent job of weaving the lives of the three women together, using dogs and ancient goddesses as the things that link the three of them.

The story starts out with Abby, a young woman who has inherited her grandmother’s property in a college town. She arrives in town with her pet Newfoundland, Bowser, to claim the building that contains a coffee shop and several apartments. Next, Daisy is introduced: she’s a woman who works at the local college, is in her thirties, and who’s dog-sitting her mother’s terrier, Bailey. And finally, Shar arrives on the scene: a forty-eight year old college professor, unhappy in her current relationship, who seeks comfort from her best friend, a dachshund named Wolfie. Notice a pattern here? Yep, you got it – they are all linked to a dog.

Each woman sees a notice for dog training being held in the history department at the college, a department that is housed in an ancient temple structure that was transported straight from Mesopotamia. A mysterious woman named Kammani, is leading the “dog training” session which is in reality Kammani’s search to find the descendents of her servant goddesses who can restore her to her former glory. It is at this class that the three woman meet and are told they are the ones who can raise Kammani back to her ancient heights of power. The three women’s stories continue to intertwine as each meets a man who is perfect for her – they just don’t know it yet!

I loved the way the story effortlessly connected the women’s adventures, even though you knew three different people were writing it. It was a unique approach to the usual anthology setup of separate storylines and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The authors give us a lot of action, cute dog sidekicks, and three top notch romance stories that all come together in the end. Here’s hoping the ladies are working on another book together! Dogs and Goddesses rocks!
