A Game Of Thrones by George RR Martin Title: A Game of Thrones
Author: George R. R. Martin
Pages: 704
Genre: Fantasy

A Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy book that’s become a classic amongst fantasy fans. In this installment the accidental death of the King creates war and havoc in the country of Westeros and pits the Stark and Lannister families against each other, both coveting the empty throne. The deceased King was a Stark, who kept the kingdom at peace through his marriage to Queen Cersei, a Lannister. His death has resulted in chaos and subterfuge amongst both families.

The Plot:

The story unfolds shortly before the death of King Robert. The King asks Eddard Stark to accept the position of his highest advisor, of which Stark begrudgingly accepts. Soon thereafter he and his family move to King’s Landing in the south. In a twist of fate, Stark’s son Bran is involved in what appears to be an accident, but is more likely to be the result of foul play at the hands of the Lannister clan.

The kingdom of Westeros is divided into northern and southern regions. The cold north is aptly named, Winterfell. Winterfell is surrounded by a wall of ice constantly guarded by the Night’s Watch, a group of men sworn to allegiance to the throne and seclusion, abandoning family and friends for the cause. Ironically, Stark’s bastard son Jon decides to join the Night’s Watch, where he becomes a friend to a potential family enemy, a dwarf named Tyrion Lannister.

Another sub-plot involves Daenerys (Dany) Targaryen, a woman who is the true last heir to the kingdom of Westeros. As you can imagine, her life is in constant danger. As such she was forced to flee Westeros as a young girl. Unbeknownst to the Starks and Lannisters, Dany is slowly building her power and her army and plans to take her rightful place on the throne in Westeros.

Elements of medieval European practices, Mongol history, dragons, warfare and European geography make Westeros a wondrous and fantastical kingdom. While there is some sorcery and magic going on in Westeros, most of the plot involves bloody battles and fierce feuds between the dynastic clans. Rape, pillaging and outright murder are also prevalent plot elements in the book. Sexuality and sex are also an integral part of the novel, as some characters struggle with issues of sexual identity.

Author George R. R. Martin employs a unique method in the telling of the story. In A Game of Thrones the plot is peeled away through the eyes of the royal combatants. Chapters are devoted to specific characters in the story which later meld together in the final chapters. A Game of Thrones is the first fantasy book in The Song of Ice and Fire series. Adult readers who enjoy books of intrigue and mystery will most certainly enjoy this truly epic fantasy novel.

Changeless by Gail Carriger Title: Changeless
Author: Gail Carriger
Pages: 400
Genre: Fantasy

The ever sassy, but enterprising Alexia is back at Queen Victoria’s court to unravel a worrisome mystery. Something or someone is depriving the supernatural beings of their unique other worldly abilities. Like a fog, the mysterious unseen force settles over a region zapping the power of the immortals, before it moves on to another part of the country. Eventually, the abilities are restored; however, some paranormal beings are not so lucky. Case in point: hauntings are becoming a rare occurrence, because the ghosts are literally disappearing.

Alexia, a woman without a soul and her new werewolf husband, Conall Maccon must now uncover the origin of the problem. The independent Alexia is further annoyed by her husband’s sudden departure to Scotland. Barely married three months, Alexia is in no mood to be outdone or left behind. After all, their romance was anything but ordinary. Upon their first meeting, the two would-be lovebirds engaged in a battle of sarcasm and wit. With time, the verbal sparring drew them closer together. This is what makes her husband’s sudden leave so perplexing. He loves being with Alexia and clearly makes his affections known in public.

Conall Maccon, Earl of Woolsey is an alpha werewolf in the employ of the Bureau of Unnatural Registry (BUR). Maccon believes the recent outbreak of mysterious occurrences in the paranormal community may be connected to his ancestral home in Scotland. Following her husband’s lead, Alexia also departs to visit the old Scottish manor home. It should also be noted that Alexia is herself an advisor to the Queen on matters involving the supernatural.

Although their jobs relating to paranormal activity keep the couple quite busy, they are kept equally busy with so-called “normal” yet eccentric friends and family members. Alexia’s barely tolerable sister Felicity and Miss Hisslepenny add some comic relief to the story. Hisslepenny is known for her attraction to outrageously ridiculous and hideous hats. And of course, fans of the series will agree that the novel would not be complete without the dashing vampire Lord Akeldama, the biggest gossip and most stylist undead in London.

Another cast regular in this fantasy series is Madame Lefoux. She’s an unusual female character in that she always dresses as a man. She’s also an inventor and her behavior suggests she may be sexually attracted to Alexia. Although Lefoux’s loyalty is sometimes questionable Alexia knows she’s a good ally to have when there’s danger afoot.

Changeless is the second fantasy book in the Parasol Protectorate series authored by Gail Carriger. Readers will delight in knowing that a little mystery involving an ancient Egyptian object is also part of the plot. More gadgetry and dirigible rides, along with a little romance make Changeless a book that’s hard to put down.

A Storm of Swords Title: A Storm of Swords
Author: George R. R. Martin
Pages: 1216
Genre: Fantasy

Book three of the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Storm of Swords, is as much a novel in itself as much as it is a part of the series. In fact it is the longest book in the series till date. Author George R. R. Martin keeps the recaps in the novels to a minimum which means that it’ll be hard for you to understand the plots if you haven’t read the first two books.

Martin advances the story line in this book beyond the seven kingdoms. Jon Snow and the men of the Night Watch seem to spend quite a bit of time beyond the northern wall. The exiled Queen Daenerys Targaryen’s story from across the sea also moves along significantly in this one. The mistress of the only three dragons left in the fictional world makes her way to the blood soaked land with looming possibilities for the next book in the series.

Of the five challengers for the Iron Throne one of them winds up dead! It is rather surprising to see Martin let go of one of his main characters for the sake of the story. But of course, that’s what makes the tale so gripping – the gritty reality of it. If the main characters dint experience the same fate as many, many others in the epic war, it just would not be real, now would it?

The wars are fiercer than ever and the plots and counter plots ever fascinating. Joffrey Lannister sits on the Iron Throne ruling the seven kingdoms from the coveted throne while his rival Lord Stannis burns with disgrace and defeat. Robb Stark is still the ruler of the north and plots against the hated Lannisters even though one of his sisters is still a hostage at King’s Landing.

As the conflicting kingdoms make their move leading them to the final battle a multitude of barbarians from the outermost civilizations arrive with a throng of mystical creatures. The animated corpses of the paranormal army are relentless leaving the future of the land hanging and no one can find solace in this true Storm of Swords.

Soulless by Gail Carringer

Soulless by Gail Carriger Title: Soulless
Author: Gail Carringer
Pages: 384
Genre: Fantasy

Vampires and werewolves roam the streets of Victorian England; however, these immortal beings are not relegated to living in the shadows or in dark, dank vermin infested alleys. The bulk of this ilk occupies the upper echelon of polite Victorian society. Unfortunately, the attack on Alexia Tarabotti could extinguish the peaceful coexistence of humans and immortals. While attending a high society function, Alexia is confronted by a vampire intent on killing her.

Alexia is an extraordinary woman. She does not possess a soul. Born to an English mother and an Italian father, she is constantly warned that her unrefined Italian heritage is not an asset in proper English society. In fact, her hyper-emotional mother and offbeat sisters consider Alexia a spinster at the ripe old age of twenty-six. Although she realizes that her adventurous lifestyle is not considered appropriate for a woman her age, she continues to move forward and look beyond a state of matrimony. Alexia keeps her soulless state a secret from her family, but she is aware that her deceased father also lacked a soul.

The lack of a soul does have a certain advantage. It has endowed her with a special ability. As long as she maintains physical contact with an immortal being, their superhuman strength dissipates leaving them temporarily human. Her strange talent is well known throughout the supernatural community, which makes the attack even more puzzling.

Alexia’s attacker was a vampire, who cornered her in the library. Her touch relieved him of his super strength, but he continued his assault. Wrapping his hands around her neck in an attempt to strangle the life out of her, Alexia was forced to defend herself. Using her parasol, she managed to stab the bloodthirsty beast. Although it was not her intent, the stab proved fatal for the attacker.

As vampires begin to disappear, all sides begin to suspect Alexia is involved. In order to clear her name, Alexia joins forces with Lord Maccon. Maccon is the fourth Earl of Woolsey and an alpha werewolf. Maccon heads the Bureau of Unnatural Registry, which regularly meets with and advises Queen Victoria. The supernaturals have a long history of English allegiance.

Initially, neither one is thrilled to be working with the other. Maccon is somewhat baffled by women and Alexia finds Maccon a little too rough around the edges for her taste; however, it is not long before chemistry begins to brew between them.

Soulless is a unique tale of romance, mystery, paranormal and alternate history. Author Gail Carringer does a wonderful job of marrying all the elements in this debut novel. Captivated readers will look forward to the next book in the Parasol Protectorate series.

Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesTitle: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Author: Seth Grahame-Smith
Pages: 320
Genre: Fantasy

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a mash-up (combination) novel bringing together the 1813 classic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and current zombie fiction elements in one satirical novel.

When Jason Rekulak, the editor of Quirk Books publishing house, compared a list of current popular characters (like Ninjas, Zombies, Pirates and Monkeys) with public domain books (like War and Peace, Crime and Punishment, and Wuthering Heights) first came up with the goofy idea. Jason later gave the idea to author Seth Grahame-Smith which led to the conception of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In response to what his inspirations were in writing the book (in a TIME interview) Seth said: “[Rekulak] called me one day, out of the blue, very excitedly, and he said, all I have is this title, and I can’t stop thinking about this title. And he said: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. For whatever reason, it just struck me as the most brilliant thing I’d ever heard.”

In his book, Seth skillful combines contemporary elements to the classic novel – “(when) you kill somebody off in Chapter 7, it has repercussions in Chapter 56”. He also says that the novel Pride and Prejudice was apposite for the modern day zombie story. “You have this fiercely independent heroine, you have this dashing heroic gentleman, you have a militia camped out for seemingly no reason whatsoever nearby, and people are always walking here and there and taking carriage rides here and there . . . It was just ripe for gore and senseless violence; from my perspective anyway.”

The plot line is that of Pride and Prejudice. The only difference is that the entire saga takes place in an alternate universe where Zombies freely roamed the countryside of Regency era England (between 1811 and 1820 when Prince Regent ruled in England instead of his unfit father King George the III.) The dead ancestors of England, in this satirical adaptation, are viewed by the characters as a troublesome nuisance (although deadly) and are referred as the “sorry stricken”, “undead”, “unmentionables”, and sometimes “zombies”. The hidden parody here is that the word “zombie” did not even exist in the English dictionary then. The word’s first known use is around 1871 (according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.)

These innovative additions to Pride and Prejudice considerably alter the genre of the book by giving it a humorous twist. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was given an ‘A’ grade in a review by The A.V. Club (an entertainment newspaper) and added “(w)hat begins as a gimmick ends with renewed appreciation of the indomitable appeal of Austen’s language, characters, and situations…”.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra ClareTitle: Clockwork Angel
Author: Cassandra Clare
Pages: 496
Genre: Fantasy

The year is 1878 and Tessa Gray is waiting for her brother on a dank London dock. She has crossed the Atlantic and is anxiously anticipating their reunion. Unfortunately, Nate is nowhere to be found. She is worried, but quickly approached by two women professing they are there on Nate’s behalf. They promise to take sixteen-year old Tessa to her brother; however, these Dark Sisters have other plans for Tessa.

Clockwork Angel is the first book in the Infernal Devices young adult fantasy series. In this book, author Cassandra Clare introduces the reader to Tessa Gray, a young woman with an untapped extraordinary ability that soon puts her in danger. Tessa is thrown into the dark underworld of Victorian London and its Pandemonium Club. The Dark Sisters, aware of the ability still dormant in Tessa, kidnap her for their master, the Magister. There, they intend to coax out Tessa’s ability to transform and use it for their own dark and dastardly purposes. The Magister operates the Pandemonium Club and he is determined to take Tessa’s power and make it his own.

Her escape from the Dark Sisters brings short-lived relief, as Tessa soon discovers she has become the prey for an assortment of other demonic creatures lurking in the London underworld. Alone in a strange city and hunted by those who covet her power, Tessa is taken in by the Shadowhunters. The Shadowhunters have sworn to protect humans from the ravages of the underworld beings. Tessa finds not only refuge in the London based institute, she also makes some unlikely friendships. In exchange for her help in defeating the Magistrate and his underlings, members promise to help her find her brother.

Tessa learns she is not quite human; instead, she is what the Shadowhunters call a Downworlder. Downworlders are the creatures of the supernatural world, both good and evil. During the course of the story, Tessa develops special bonds with two of the Shadowhunters. Jem is quiet, but friendly and outgoing. Will is more reserved and aloof, but both have dark secret pasts. Ultimately, these friendships will put Tessa in a situation, in which she will be forced to make a choice between her brother and her friends.

Clare is no stranger to this genre. The Infernal Devices serial is a historical backdrop to her Mortal Instruments series, which takes place in the future. In Clockwork Angel, the reader learns that Magnus, the warlock has been shaped by the events of his earlier life. This is a crucial point into understanding the Magnus of the Mortal Devices series. Readers of all ages will enjoy this imaginative tale of the supernatural.
