Supernatural Mystery Book: Changeless by Gail Carriger
Title: Changeless
Author: Gail Carriger
Pages: 400
Genre: Fantasy
The ever sassy, but enterprising Alexia is back at Queen Victoria’s court to unravel a worrisome mystery. Something or someone is depriving the supernatural beings of their unique other worldly abilities. Like a fog, the mysterious unseen force settles over a region zapping the power of the immortals, before it moves on to another part of the country. Eventually, the abilities are restored; however, some paranormal beings are not so lucky. Case in point: hauntings are becoming a rare occurrence, because the ghosts are literally disappearing.
Alexia, a woman without a soul and her new werewolf husband, Conall Maccon must now uncover the origin of the problem. The independent Alexia is further annoyed by her husband’s sudden departure to Scotland. Barely married three months, Alexia is in no mood to be outdone or left behind. After all, their romance was anything but ordinary. Upon their first meeting, the two would-be lovebirds engaged in a battle of sarcasm and wit. With time, the verbal sparring drew them closer together. This is what makes her husband’s sudden leave so perplexing. He loves being with Alexia and clearly makes his affections known in public.
Conall Maccon, Earl of Woolsey is an alpha werewolf in the employ of the Bureau of Unnatural Registry (BUR). Maccon believes the recent outbreak of mysterious occurrences in the paranormal community may be connected to his ancestral home in Scotland. Following her husband’s lead, Alexia also departs to visit the old Scottish manor home. It should also be noted that Alexia is herself an advisor to the Queen on matters involving the supernatural.
Although their jobs relating to paranormal activity keep the couple quite busy, they are kept equally busy with so-called “normal” yet eccentric friends and family members. Alexia’s barely tolerable sister Felicity and Miss Hisslepenny add some comic relief to the story. Hisslepenny is known for her attraction to outrageously ridiculous and hideous hats. And of course, fans of the series will agree that the novel would not be complete without the dashing vampire Lord Akeldama, the biggest gossip and most stylist undead in London.
Another cast regular in this fantasy series is Madame Lefoux. She’s an unusual female character in that she always dresses as a man. She’s also an inventor and her behavior suggests she may be sexually attracted to Alexia. Although Lefoux’s loyalty is sometimes questionable Alexia knows she’s a good ally to have when there’s danger afoot.
Changeless is the second fantasy book in the Parasol Protectorate series authored by Gail Carriger. Readers will delight in knowing that a little mystery involving an ancient Egyptian object is also part of the plot. More gadgetry and dirigible rides, along with a little romance make Changeless a book that’s hard to put down.
