New Fantasy Book – Kitty’s House of Horrors

Kitty's House of HorrorsA supernatural reality show, how cool would that be? The more Carrie Vaughn writes, the more I keep wishing that her stories were real because I want these stories to be true, they are so fascinating. With her latest novel, Kitty’s House of Horrors, Carrie Vaughn has made the series more ‘real’ than ever. Kitty has agreed to participate in a TV reality show that features different members of the supernatural community that have come ‘out’. If the supernatural community truly existed, I can see it happening just the way she describes it in her book. There are the crazies who want to kill supernaturals, the groupies who want to become supernaturals, and the average person who just wants to know more. I can also picture someone like Kitty, who is just trying to help educate the public – in addition to giving her great publicity for her radio show.

The cast of characters for this unique show are mostly friends or acquaintances of Kitty’s which makes her stay in the remote mountain cabin – the setting for the reality show – more bearable. Her husband Ben is not going with her, he is busy trying to get their friend and mentor, Cormac, out of jail. Her telepathic friend Tina is there as well as Jeffrey from a previous book and two new vampires she has never met. Odysseus Grant, the mysterious magician from Las Vegas, is included in the reality show’s cast. The vampires have brought along a snack in the form of an absolutely gorgeous guy and, to top it all off, the show’s creators have added Conrad the skeptic to the bunch because he believes that supernatural beings are fake and he is there to prove it.

It would seem that simply the idea of a supernatural reality show would be enough for a great read but, to make it even better, the reality show itself is a cover for a menacing scheme that I did not see coming at all. Vaughn has a gift for creating situations through which you can truly empathize with supernatural beings. I really like the series because I relate to the supernaturals and care about the characters. When Kitty and the other guests at the cabin find out something is not right about their situation, they handle it just like a regular group of people would handle it, keeping me thoroughly engrossed the entire time trying to figure out what was going on.

As with all of the books in the Kitty Norville series, I highly recommend this latest installment, it’s been the most fun for me out of the entire series. The author knows how to write a good mystery because I had to stop myself from reading the end several times – I just had to know what was the ‘real’ story about the events on the set of the reality show. And, because I could not wait to find out how it ended, I think you will have a hard time waiting too.
