Review of Once Upon a Time Episode 17 “Hat Trick”
Posted by: | Comments
As I mentioned last week, this episode is a bit of a departure since instead of going to the usual FairyTale world, we visit Wonderland from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I love the fact that they got Roger Daltry to guest star in this episode when he does the voice of the very familiar caterpillar during the Queen’s adventure into Wonderland.
Of course, we begin with Mary Margaret’s escape from jail. Henry seems to think this is Emma’s doing, but she has no clue how Mary Margaret escaped. With Mr. Gold threatening Emma if Mary Margaret is not back the next morning for her arraignment, Emma is off in her cute yellow bug to see if she can find her.
Of course, it is foggy and while driving through this sudden fog she hits someone! He turns out to be Jefferson, someone we have never met before because, it turns out, he hasn’t been able to leave his house for years. How he managed to be on the road away from his home so Emma could hit him is never explained, however.
We are soon in Fairytale Land where we see Jefferson again, with his daughter Grace. She is obviously the apple of his eye. When the Queen arrives at their home he tells Grace to hide while he deals with the Queen. She obviously wants him to do something for her, and soon finds a way to get him to agree by promising his daughter will want for nothing if he does this one last favor for her. When are people going to learn that this woman cannot be trusted? You would think it was obvious at this point.
Meanwhile, back at the home front, Emma is dropping the injured Jefferson off at his enormous house. Emma had told him she was looking for a lost dog, and he offers to make her a warm drink to help her on a cold night like this and she accepts. While drinking she begins to feel woozy and before you know it – bam- she is out cold. Jefferson soon as her tied up. Seems that this Jefferson guy is not the good guy we thought he was!
Back in Fairytale Land we see his daughter asking for a white rabbit in the marketplace, and then when they go home she is setting up a tea party with some familiar looking creatures. He tells her to play at her neighbors as he has something he has to do. We know he is going to help the evil Queen, and he doesn’t look too happy about it.
But back at the big house in Storybrooke, we see that Emma has managed to free herself and is scouting the house out when she discovers Mary Margaret tied up in another room. She frees her and the two are about to make their escape when our Mad Hatter discovers them. Drats!
Meanwhile, back in FairyTale we see the Hatter take a box down and bring it to the Queen. He opens it for her, and inside is a beautiful top hat. When he spins it, it turns into a magic portal. Both he and the Queen jump into the portal that takes them to a room full of doors, one of which he opens that leads them to a magic wonderland of mushrooms and very strange talking caterpillars (yay Roger!).
While back in Storybrooke’s Hatter Mansion Jefferson is telling Emma how she is the key to everything, because she is special and has brought magic into the town. He tells her how he kidnapped Mary Margaret to stop her from a fatal crash and that Emma needs to believe what Henry tells her because the book is truth. She needs to make a magic hat and he will help her. But Emma isn’t buying any of this, and refuses to cooperate with him. She will not make him a magic hat that will allow him to go back home.
We are soon back in FairyTale/Wonderland where the Hatter and the Evil Queen are crashing through a maze to find a box that the Queen wants. When she grabs it, they are discovered by the Queen of Hearts guards and a quick race ensues for the two to return through the looking glass to home. But as they are escaping the Queen takes a bit of mushroom as if she is stopping for a snack.
Only she pops it into the box she has stolen, which then puffs some purple smoke and voila, there is her father. She knows only two can return since only two came, so Hatter is stuck in Wonderland while she and dear old Dad make their escape. Which is kinda weird since we know she will kill Dad later, but heck sometimes family is important. She does tell the Hatter how he is right, one should never abandon family, as she leaves knowing he will never see his daughter again. What a b#%h!!
So here we have Jefferson or The Hatter, stuck in his old house, where he can see his daughter in town living with some couple, not even aware he is nearby. Hence the need for Emma to use her magic that she has brought into town. Perhaps he isn’t so much evil as desperate. Especially when we see that in Wonderland he is caught by the Queen of Hearts who, predictably says “off with his head!” when brought before her for sentencing.
But I guess that only means you have to go around without one, because when they do take his head off, it doesn’t end in a bloody gruesome sight but rather a headless man who is told by the Queen of Hearts to make a new hat to get himself home with, since that is how he got there. Now we know why he wants Emma to make a magical hat! It is so he and Grace can go away together.
Emma says she is starting to believe; even that Mary Margaret is her mother. But Emma is just saying she believes him to put him off his guard. When his back is turned she wacks him on the head, a fight ensues as Emma runs to rescue Mary Margaret and suddenly he is pushed out a window to the grounds below. Way below, remember this is a big house. But when Emma and Mary Margaret look out the window he is nowhere to be seen, just the hat is there.
They head out and at the car Emma gives Mary Margaret the option to leave or stay and face the music. Mary agrees to return and next thing we know, she is sitting in her cell reading the local rag when Regina comes into the Sherriff’s office shocked that Mary Margaret is there. But Mr. Gold escorts her out and lets her know that even though Emma brought Mary Margaret back Regina will still get the results she needs at the arraignment. So we know some kind of deal is in the making, just not what it is…
We leave it this week with Emma and Henry sitting together, and Emma is telling him about her finding Mary Margaret as they look through his book. Sure enough, there is Jefferson/The Mad Hatter trying desperately to make a magical hat. When Grace (the hatters daughter) comes by for Henry, Emma asks if she can keep the book a bit longer, she wants to look through it some more.
Could it be that the hatter got through to Emma and she is finally beginning to believe Henry about what is going on in Storybrooke? Could we finally be seeing some movement towards Emma getting the curse lifted? This just is sounding better and better! I can’t wait for next week!
Great Fantasy TV Show: Once Upon a Time Episode 16 “Heart of Darkness”
Posted by: | Comments
Boy, talk about a dark one, this great fantasy tv show episode just brought up all kinds of things about our lovers Mary Margaret/Snow and David/Charming. The key phrase throughout was “Evil isn’t born, it is made” and it is a big clue to discovering what is happening in both places. After finding out that Red is actually a werewolf that killed her lover, well I thought I couldn’t get any more shocked but this episode was a doozy.
In Fairytale Land we see Snow in a scene that is a bad parody of the Disney films, with a bird landing on her finger that she then tries to smash. A bit of homage to Shrek, I am thinking, as well as a good indicator that the potion she drank is working to make Snow mean. Even when they redirect that anger towards the Queen, it just makes Snow want to go out and kill her. Not the solution that the dwarves and Jiminy were trying for. When she steals the knights armor it just goes to prove that Snow is not the gal we know. The dwarves and Jiminy decide it is time for Rumpie to help.
But back in real time, Emma has to question Mary Margaret. After all Mary’s fingerprints are all over the box with Kathryn’s heart, which later is established by DNA (Wow- that quick?) is indeed Kathryn’s heart. So it looks like Mary did do the deed. It doesn’t help when Henry and Emma search her room and find a hidden knife. So it is to the jail for MM, with Mr. Gold offering to represent her. Not so sure I would trust him, but he does seem truly interested in getting her off the charges.
Henry meanwhile is sure she isn’t guilty and when he sulks into his hot chocolate, August comes by and tells him to look in his book for the answers. Which of course leads to the big question about the guy- just who is he? So far, no clues to which fairy tale character he is, if he is one at all. Makes you wonder if he is the one who knows the whole story, because he doesn’t act like someone who doesn’t remember his past, more like someone who knows it and keeps it a secret. But why?
Back in FairyTale, Snow goes to Rumpie for help in killing the Queen. He is only too glad to oblige. Of course, he grumbles that love is the only thing he has been unable to bottle, but we know this is a clue for things yet to come. The man never says anything without a reason! We aren’t at all surprised when Charming comes to him for help in stopping Snow from killing the Queen, which for the price of a princely cloak Rumpie seems willing to do. But when Charming tries to stop her by kissing her all he gets for his trouble is a sock and getting tied up. To make matters worse, in the end it is Charming and not Snow that is arrested for the attempt on the Queen.
Back at home, we see more clues for us when Dr. Harper puts David under hypnosis to see if he can remember anything that will either condemn or free Mary Margaret regarding Kathryn’s murder. What he does remember is from when he was Charming! So perhaps this means that everyone’s memories are starting to come back!
But what he may be remembering is not Mary Margaret killing Kathryn but rather Snow attempting to kill the Queen. Which might explain why Regina has planted the knife (Henry figures this one out, of course!) and is trying to get MM blamed for Kathryn’s death. But the real question is, if Regina killed Kathryn, why? She has nothing to gain from it, outside of using it to frame MM for the death. Perhaps that is reason enough for someone like Regina.
So Mary Margaret finds a key to release her from jail in her bed, and Emma comes to tell her the heart is indeed Kathryn’s but she knows that Mary Margaret didn’t do it. The trick is proving it. The closing scenes were great – with Regina going to Gold for help but he just tells her she is more powerful then she can imagine (after all, isn’t he Mary Margaret’s lawyer? Why would he help Regina then?), as we see Rumpelstiltskin gleefully adding a hair each from Snow and Charming, to give him the elusive Love Potion. But for whom is he making it?
Stay tuned as next week we leave this all behind and take a turn in Wonderland where we meet The Mad Hatter and more! Looks fun and very interesting, so be sure to check here for details!
Recap of Once Upon a Time Episode 15 “Red Handed”
Posted by: | Comments
This episode was a bit of a shocker for many that I spoke to, including me! Boy- if anyone was still complaining that the show wasn’t moving the story forward, they were in for a surprise this week! Because this week lots of things happened, and most of them either filled in missing parts or added more to the story of the town awakening to what they really are.
Of course, the main part of the story in Storybrooke continues to be the search for the missing Kathryn. It is kinda handy that Emma can tell when someone is lying, as she therefore knows that when David says he doesn’t know what happened to her, he is telling the truth. But for me the fun part of the story is that it was all about Red/Ruby this time. She has always been my favorite character and this week the spotlight is on her.
That story starts with Ruby in Granny’s Diner, where as usual she is acting flirtatious with a customer, this time it is August as he tells her stories about his travels. Granny lets her know very clearly that she needs to stop flirting and start working. And that segues nicely to our Fairyland story, where we see Red talking and flirting with Peter (as in Peter and the Wolf?) who is a local boy who is quite smitten with Red and wants her to run away with him.
Granny is dealing with a pompous Mayor and his crew of wolf hunters, trying to convince the men it is a bad idea to form a posse to go look for a dangerous wolf that is prowling the area. When they leave we see Granny and Red go through all kinds of preparations to lock any roaming wolf out of their home. Red is reminded to wear her red hood that repels wolves and then Red heads for bed, with Granny holding down the fort in the living room with a crossbow on her lap. Man- I would not want to mess with that woman!
Back in Storybrooke Ruby and Granny are at it again, with Granny telling Ruby she needs to start working Saturday’s too – they are just too busy for her to have that night off. When Ruby accuses her of punishing her, Granny says my favorite line – “you dress like a drag queen during fleet week” along with Ruby’s great comeback, “and you dress like Norman Bates when he dresses like Norman Bates mother.” Those two can really get at each other, and these lines were so in character! So- when Granny tells Ruby to stop acting like a kid and Ruby retorts she just wants to have some adventures it is inevitable that the argument would escalate until Ruby quits.
We return to FairyLand to see Red waking up to find Granny still awake in the chair, crossbow still in lap. When Gran sends Red off to check on the chickens Red finds Snow (my name is Frosty- no Margaret, no it is Mary. Talk about connecting the Fairyland lives to the Storybrooke lives, this one was clever) hiding in the coop to escape the horrific howls that filled the night. The explanation of the big bad wolf that is stalking the area comes out and as the two walk out to the well to get water they find it completely fouled by blood – blood from the Mayor’s hunting party, dead with their throats slashed. Seems they found the wolf after all.
As we return to Storybrooke we take a break from Red’s story to see Emma and Mary Margaret talking about how David is doing and Kathryn’s disappearance. Emma is warning Mary Margaret of how most people would assume that she and David had something to do with Kathryn’s disappearance when they comes across Ruby with suitcase in hand. She explains what happened and that she is taking a bus out of town. (I thought no one could leave town? If so – why is there a bus that goes through town? This is confusing.) Luckily, Emma and Mary Margaret convince Ruby to give the plan a few days and stay with them until then.
Soon, we are back in FairyLand where Granny is telling the Mayor he has to stop trying to hunt the wolf- you can’t! She tells of losing her brothers and father to a wolf, showing them the scars to back up her story. You can’t beat this wolf, she says, all you can do is hide from it. But this running from the wolf doesn’t sit well with Red, who tells Snow/Mary that they can’t sit around waiting for the wolf to pounce, they need to track it down during the day when it is more vulnerable. So Snow and Red take bows and arrows and go off to track down the wolf, with Red telling White, “when I want something I am good at tracking it down” Hmmm, could mean more than just a wolf, I am thinking.
Meanwhile in Storybrooke a different kind of tracking is going on as Mary Margaret is out in the woods on the edge of town looking for Kathryn when she comes upon David, looking dazed and out of it. All he can say is “I’m looking for it”. We aren’t sure what “it” is, but what happens later has me wondering what his role in the grisly affair at the end of the show must be.
Meanwhile, Henry is at the Sheriff’s office using the computer to help Ruby find a new job. Someone at one of the fan sites noticed the same thing I did about this scene – that Henry and a few others who are getting aware of just what the story is in Storybrooke are getting more tech-savvy. In fact, if you look at the episodes you will notice that early on the technology was out of date, now it seems to be catching up. Could this be part of the spell losing its grip on the town?
While Henry and Ruby are looking online for work for her, the non-emergency phone line rings and Ruby picks it up. When Emma walks in to find Ruby handling a problem over the phone with ease, she tells her that she has room in the budget for someone to help with phones and such; does she want to be her assistant? Well, an assistant to the Sheriff sounds much more adventurous then being a waitress to Ruby, so she says yes. Ruby takes off to do that all important run to the diner for lunch as Mary Margaret walks in. She is worried about David; he is acting strange and wandering the woods. She tells Emma she is worried because he isn’t acting like himself, it is as if he was a completely different person.
We return to FairyLand to see Red and Snow tracking prints that are slowly turning into a man’s boot print. It becomes obvious to all of us that their wolf is a werewolf, and as they follow the prints to her window, they come to the conclusion the werewolf is Peter. They decide they have to save him by revealing what he is to his human side. When they tell him he is skeptical but believes her. He tells her to chain him so he won’t hurt anyone. She says she will stay with him during the night to be sure he is all right and when he seems amazed she would do this for him she affirms, I would do anything for you.
Meanwhile back in Storybrooke Ruby picks up lunch at the diner, as Granny tells her that she hopes she finds what she is looking for. Ruby says she is doing just that and leaves. It is very prophetic in many ways. We see Henry telling Emma that Ruby is Red Riding Hood and that Emma needs to let Ruby do more. When Ruby returns looking down, Emma takes Henry up on his suggestion and tells Ruby that she needs her to do a wilderness search with her in the area where David was last seen. As they are walking through the woods Ruby says she hears David, and they come across him lying unconscious in the woods. She hears an unconscious man? When they rouse him he says he has no memory of anything after he left the Sheriff’s office the night before. Could he be the wolf? Why does he keep blacking out like this? Is it related to a weakening of the spell?
When they examine David at the hospital it seems that this is another episode like the last one, where he walks around in a daze and later has no memory of anything he did. Of course, from Emma’s questions we realize that she is beginning to wonder if the reason it seemed like he wasn’t lying when he said he didn’t know what happened to Kathryn is because he did something in this dazed state and just doesn’t remember it, so he isn’t lying at all. Could he be capable of kidnapping or killing Kathryn?
But Regina walks in and tells David he needs to lawyer up and stop talking to Emma, then reads Emma the riot act about not reading David his rights. When Emma says she isn’t arresting David, Regina then retorts that if that is so shouldn’t she be out looking for Kathryn instead of sitting her harassing David? So Emma calls Ruby, tells her to take her Volkswagen bug out to the bridge where they found David today and start looking around. She tells her to just trust her instincts, which have proven to be really good so far. So Ruby does so- wandering around on the shore until she comes across a piece of plywood that is covering something hidden in the sand. It is a box. When she opens it – she screams.
We kick back to FairyLand now, where Granny discovers Snow in Red’s bed, to disguise the fact that Red has been all night with Peter to watch over him as he goes through the change. Snow is even wearing Red’s hood – which causes Granny no end of grief. Telling her she is a stupid girl, they take off to the wood after Snow explains that Red is safe because Peter is chained and Red is with him. Granny mutters “the poor boy!” and heads out. It turns out it is Red that turns into a wolf, and now she is alone with a chained human as willing victim. The hood was from a wizard to prevent Red from changing. We can hear Peter pleading for his life but luckily we don’t see onscreen the horrible slaughter by Red as the wolf. As Granny and Snow make their way through the wood to Red and a now dead Peter we learn the truth behind the wolf story. Apparently lycanthropy runs in the family. Granny was turned by the grandfather although she is barely affected outside of a really good sense of smell. Red’s mom, Granny daughter, did the full change and was killed by hunters after marrying and having Red. Red inherited the trait and Granny got the red hood from a wizard to control her shifts, but she never told Red the truth about herself. As they come upon Red, she is in full wolf mode, and Granny is forced to shoot her with a silver tipped arrow to prevent her from killing them. She only wounds her, and quickly tells Snow to put the red hood on a now dropped wolf, which changes it back to Red again. But they are too late for poor Peter. Faced with the truth, Red and Snow decide they must both take off for the woods to hide.
Back in Storybrooke, Emma and Ruby are talking because Ruby is really upset about what she has discovered down at the shore. Emma tries to reassure her she did really well, first finding David and then the box with its gruesome contents. But Ruby is shook, and returns to the diner to ask for her old job back. She has had enough adventure for now. When Granny reveals to Ruby that the reason she wanted her to work Saturdays was because she wants her to learn all aspects of the business so she can take the diner over when Granny retires, Ruby is floored. Why her? But Granny says who else but someone I love who loves me too? So we leave Ruby at the diner looking much happier.
Finally, we close with Mary Margaret and David talking at the vet where he works. He is quite upset about his blackouts and worried that he might be the one who has hurt Kathryn. Mary Margaret is trying to convince him otherwise when Emma walks in with the news that Ruby has found something- a box with a human heart in it. Could this be the “it” that David was looking for when they came across him in the woods? She thinks it may be Kathryn’s heart. To make matters even worse, there are fingerprints inside the box. At first David insists they arrest him then and there, but Emma says no, they aren’t your prints. The prints belong to Mary Margaret.
Okay- so talk about a shocker of a show! Who would have thought this one up? Ruby is a werewolf and now we find what looks like Kathryn’s heart! But is it? Remember all those hearts in a box that Regina was checking on in the underground room a few episodes back? Could this be the huntsman’s heart from then? What do you think? I get the feeling things are going to heat up pretty quick at this point – because more than just Henry is starting to come out of the fog that the spell created in everyone’s memory. Who will be next? And just whose heart is in that box?
Recap: Once Upon a Time Episode 14 “Dreamy”
Posted by: | Comments
Well we are back and this one was a fun episode. Lots of love and fairy dust for everyone! Wow- did you know that fairy dust comes from diamonds? That was a new one on me! I loved that we got an explanation for how Grumpy got his name, that he wasn’t always a grumpy kinda guy. And didn’t you just love that much of the time when we saw all the dwarfs there was a little very familiar tune playing in the background? I think some of the folks at the show just had a good time with this week’s episode.
Of course, it wasn’t as if the mystery with Kathryn’s disappearance has been forgotten, we did see Emma doing a bit of investigative work. With Sidney (do you really trust this guy?) noting that her bags are still in the trunk, Emma’s hope that Kathryn hitchhiked to Boston when her car broke down just doesn’t gel. And what is up with David denying her spoke to Kathryn before she left when we know he did?
But the best story this episode was the Dreamy/Leroy story. First we meet poor clumsy Nova, dropping magic dust on a dwarf egg so that Dreamy is hatched dreaming of her and looking for his fairy to love. Of course, having Leroy fall for her counterpart in Storybrooke might mean that the magic curse is not as strong as it once was. So when he comes up with the very smart plan to make everyone buy candles so that the convent can make enough money to pay Mr. Gold their rent – it just shows that true love will prevail no matter what kind of curse there is.
The whole “dwarfs come from eggs” and get their names from magic axes was very fun and imaginative. As usual, the part of the story that takes place in Fairyland is the best part of the episode, but we did see some stuff that was worthwhile in Storybrooke.
But the real question is, where is Kathryn? Did she actually make it out of Storybrooke? If she did – does this mean the curse is getting weaker? And where the heck was Henry this week? He is our bridge between worlds and seems to be missing in action a lot lately. Brig the kid back – I say! But at least the town seems to be ready to stop picking on poor Mary Margaret, for the time being.
Dreaming of the Next Episode of Once Upon a Time
Posted by: | Comments
Since this little show called the Oscars pre-empted our latest episode of Once Upon a Time, I thought I would give you a few images and the preview about the episode that will run next week, “Dreamy” just to keep us all going until we can slip back into our fun little fantasy world of Once Upon a Time.
I will say that I am hearing more and more chatter about the show and am glad to hear that many people who felt lost at the beginning of the show are starting to really fall in love with it. Yes, the writing and plotting is pretty ambitious for a TV show – but isn’t that what we all have really wanted? Here is a great fantasy-based story that isn’t cookie-cutter and has some real complex story lines. But you and I know that – it is why we watch every week. And why we miss it – even if we are enjoying watching wonderful films like Hugo and The Artist win those cute little golden statues on Sunday night.
First- in case you missed it – here is the preview they ran at the end of Episode 13 about what is coming up on March 4th for us:
Word is that we are going to see plenty more of those dwarves, especially Grumpy and that Belle will be back and in the spotlight for the episode. I for one am looking forward to this as Emilie de Ravin was so perfect in this role the last time we saw her.
So, I hope you enjoy these pics from the set, and stay tuned for our hashing out of the episode when it runs next Sunday. See you all here next week!
One Upon a Time Episode 12 – Skin Deep
Posted by: | Comments
This week we get a treat in the form of a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and one of the better episodes to come along in a while. I guess I have been secretly rooting for Rumpie because in this episode we see that underneath that ugly demeanor, is a truly lonely man. The FairyTale Land sequences, where we watch Belle offer to heroically be the victim so her village can be saved reveal more about Mr. Gold/Rumpie than we have seen in a while, and yet still show that power remains one of his prime motivators. But there are times when we get a glimpse of the heart inside, such as his remark near the end when the Evil Queen tells him what happened to Belle when she returns home, and he is hoping it means she needs a home to return to. Perhaps even his home? But, of course, he is told that is not so, that Belle was locked in a tower by her father and eventually killed herself.
But to get back to our story- it began in Fairytale land when we see a war is being waged and the village where Belle lives is threatened. Apparently only Rumpie can save them, so they strike a deal and what he wants in return is Belle. She comes to live with him, but only as a housekeeper of sorts, and what could have been scenes of domestic bliss is instead a view of Rumpie’s weird humor (he was kidding about the children he kidnaps? Really?) And so we watch as Belle falls in love and Rumpie wonders if he can trust her.
Back in town we see that Mr. Gold is up to his usual when he repossess a truck belonging to Maurice who owns the flower shop, and looks remarkably like Belle’s father in FairyTale. Also, don’t forget this is the Valentine’s Day show, so we see a bit of that with Mary Margaret and David getting caught in the act by Ruby (one of my favorite characters on this show, she is just so fun!) who decides that Emma and Ashley need to join her and Mary Margaret for some girls night entertainment. So off they go, for some good times in what I assume is a new bar, since we have not heard anything of there being any besides the one bar in town before this.
Meanwhile, Gold discovers he has been robbed and gets no sympathy from Emma on it. I loved the quip he makes to her when Emma comments that he seems to be robbed pretty often. “I am a hard man to love” he answers. It’s a great connection back to the story back in our FairyTale Flashback.
Because, of course, we are proven this in the next flash – where Belle is cleaning for Rumpie and she drops the cup and chips it. The one we will see later and come to know how significant it is to Rumpelstiltskin. But for now, it is just another bit of proof he isn’t as horrible as he seems, for he doesn’t fly in a rage when she chips the cup, but simply tells her it is just a cup, not to worry. And of course, later when she falls off a ladder while tugging to open a curtain she is cleaning, she just happens to fall in his arms. Lots of close-ups of faces here – so we know something is going on…
But back in our little town, Emma has found just about everything that was stolen from Gold, except for one last thing he won’t talk about but is determined to get back. We know he is not up to anything good when he buys rope and duct tape at the same general store that David is buying not one but two Valentine’s Day cards – for the two women in his life. Boy- does this guy ever need to make a decision! Because, of course he screws up and gives MM the card he meant for the wife. I mean – come on! If you are gonna have a wife and a girlfriend, the least you can do is not mix their Valentine’s Day cards up!
Now Belle does not have this problem, because back in FairyTale she is on the road back to the village to buy straw for Rumpie, and prove she loves him by returning with the straw. Being told by a dark strange woman that all she needs to do to break his evil spell is to kiss him, she decides she must return and break Rumpie’s spell so he can be the handsome prince she is sure is under there somewhere. Hmmm- if that is all you need to break a spell, perhaps all Emma needs to do is kiss everyone in town to release them from their spell so they can remember who they are?
Too bad that isn’t what happens when Belle does kiss Rumpie – although he does seem to shed some of the ugly skin surface, just not enough to change who he is. But, of course, Rumpie’s inability to believe she could love him for himself is revealed when he decides that somehow the Queen revealing this about him to Belle just means she is trying to steal his power. And that power means everything to him, even more than Belle. So he goes in a rage, throws Belle back in the dungeon and breaks everything – except the little chipped cup. That he cannot bear to break.
And just to mirror that rage, we see Gold with the flower merchant, beating him to make him tell him who is behind the stealing, he knows it isn’t just him. But he can’t or won’t comply, Gold starts beating him with his walking stick- and soon his tirade changes to another tune – about how “she is gone – gone forever. And it is all your fault! You are her father!”
Good thing Emma shows up before he kills the guy.
As a bit of a break, and perhaps because someone realized this was getting kinda heavy for a Valentine’s Day show, we quickly break to Sean asking Ashley to marry him. And quickly, because he only has a 20 minute break for her to decide! Man – talk about your romantic scene!
But the real show stopper comes when Emma takes Gold to jail. She is holding him when Regina comes in offering 30 minutes with Henry if she can talk to Gold. I was kinda surprised she said yes, but then it is Henry and she hasn’t seen him all episode. In fact, this has got to be the only episode where Henry has only one line, because generally the kid can talk your ear off. But she makes the trade, and we get to eavesdrop on Regina making Gold admit he is Rumpelstiltskin, in return for giving him back his little chipped cup.
But why does she need to hear him say this? And if True Love’s First Kiss will break all evil spells, obviously Regina has Belle locked away (as we see at the end of this episode) so that Rumpie/Gold cannot find her and kiss her. But then, that wouldn’t be their First Kiss, so would it work? What do you guys think?
Have we found the answer to the curse, if we can just have the right person give the kiss?
