Scribner is an Epic Fantasy Tale

Scriber by Ben S dobson

Scriber by Ben S. Dobson

A narrator that is unsure of his own worthiness and a woman warrior who is as noble as she is memorable make up the center of this epic fantasy tale adventure. Dennon Lark is a scribe – a man who in a land where once education and learning was held in high esteem is now reduced to hiding from the world as books are banned and war has come to his country. It is this war, complete with mysteriously undying warriors that compels the two together.

But the real story lies in the inner lives of Dennon and Bryndine, the warrior niece of the King. She is shunned by others for her choices in life, the unladylike choice to be a warrior. Meanwhile, Dennon wrestles with his own demons as he tries to uncover the history that had vanished when books were banned and knowledge seemingly lost forever.

Dennon tries to make up for the shame he feels at his cowardice and Bryndine leads her band of women warriors into a battle she may never win. The fantasy tale is stirring and heroic without the usual dragons and elves, but I didn’t find that I missed them.

But there is a sense of the medieval otherworld that we have come to expect in our fantasy worlds. We follow Dennon’s passion to recover the destroyed history of his land and I particularly liked that we got a glimpse into his work with the little snippets at the beginning of each chapter.

Scriber rises to a crescendo at the end that is as satisfying as it is unexpected, in a time where anytime you pick up a fantasy tale you expect it to be part of an on-going series. it was refreshing to read a story that is completely contained in one book. I am very much looking forward to whatever next project Ben Dobson chooses to do.

A Fabulous Fantasy Mystery in Anathema

Posted by: | Comments (0)

fantasy bookAnathema by Megg Johnson

This wonderful fantasy book is the first in a new series by Megg Johnson and begins with Reychel, a slave girl. She has been raised a slave and has never known any other kind of life. But she knows that even though she is a slave, she isn’t treated like all the other slaves. Her master has sometimes given her preferential treatment and other times punished her for unknown reasons by isolating her from the others. In the end, we come to realize that it is this specialness that is the mystery that surrounds Reychel.

We soon discover that her life is almost in two worlds, the one that consists of the outside world, and the other of that inner isolated world of Reychel’s that separates her from the others.  Megg Johnson is very clever in her use of these two worlds to set up this mystery that is so central to the story. It creates an inner tension that simply adds to the plot as a whole.

It is Reychel’s isolation that is the twist to the story; the one item that keeps you asking “why?” and so you keep reading to find the answer to your question. The reader is taken down a very crooked path in this story, one that is full of surprises that in the end may lead to a different conclusion then you would have imagined at the beginning.

Each of the characters takes on a life of their own in this fantasy book and this just adds to the enjoyment of this fantasy book. As the author weaves their stories into the central plot of Anathema we find ourselves drawn into this world and the mysteries that are part of it. Ms. Johnson has woven us a fine tale that is just the beginning to a new and marvelous adventure.

New Fantasy Book Series Mesmer Captivates

Posted by: | Comments (0)

new fantasy book seriesSanctuary by Isabella Amaris

Lea awakens in a forest, bleeding and alone. Where she is and who she is we don’t know – but will soon find out. So begins a new fantasy book series adventure by newcomer author Isabella Amaris. It is a charming story that takes us out of our dreary everyday world and into a fantasy land of magic bearing Magi and dark dangerous forests. It is a world where Lea finds refuge in a mystical kingdom that has secrets of its own. For Lea does not dare let anyone know who and what she is.

From the moment that Caleb discovered Lea, bleeding and alone in the forest, he was fascinated by her. He could tell that she held some secrets, and he wanted to know what they were. But then, hiding secrets is not a new thing in Verlaine. It is a land that is hidden from everyone. But the Magi Gabriel has an interest in the girl too when Caleb takes her to the healer after he discovers her bleeding. Now Gabriel will not let Lea leave and return to her kingdom. But then again, it isn’t as if she seems to want to go back that badly. What kind of secrets is Lea hiding?

Sanctuary is the first book for a new fantasy book series Mesmer, and it promises to entice us all. Some of you may be aware of Isabella Amaris’s short stories that she has published through Smashmouth, and if you do then you know you are in for a treat here. Just because she hasn’t put out a full length novel doesn’t mean Isabella doesn’t know her way around a word processor – the girl can write some pretty fun short stories.

This new fantasy book series is off to a good start with Sanctuary, with lots of mystery and intrigue mixed in with a hint of romance and plenty of magic. Be sure to check it out as she has already announced the second book in the series on her blog!

Sookie Stackhouse Book 12 - Deadlocked by Charlaine HarrisThe long awaited Sookie Stackhouse Book 12 titled Deadlocked from the True Blood series is now available for you Truebie fans. The books are actually part of the Southern Vampire series but doesn’t “True Blood” sound better?

Anyway, I’m going to review this great book for you, but not to worry, I’m NOT going to include any spoilers that will ruin the reading experience for you. I’m going to give you JUST ENOUGH so you’ll want to click-ity click at the bottom of the review to order your copy of the book.

SOOKIE
I’ve noticed that with each book in the Sookie Stackhouse series our loveable girl has become emotionally stronger and more sure of herself. She’s also become more independent and had to make more snap decisions about her life and the lives of those around her. As you can guess, this has changed our little Sookie from the perky, bubbly and slightly naive young woman into someone that’s more guarded and cynical. You would be more guarded too if you’d seen some of the things she’s seen. Think about some of the violence she’s experienced. She has to be guarded.

This comes in handy in this book because it seems as if everyone around her is hooking up with the loves of their life. To name a few:

-Tara
-Jason
-Alcide
-Holly

And then there’s her grandfather Niall and her cousin Claude who drag her into a centuries old plot that threatens her ties to the only family ties she has to the fae world. With a murder charge being brought against Eric, Sookie soon finds herself facing several moral crossroads which might require her to make life changing decisions. Although it’s clear that she’s WAY too involved in the vampire, werewolf, and fae worlds to turn her back on them, she definitely longs for the time when her life was MUCH simpler.

TEAM BILL FANS
Yes, Bill makes several appearances in Deadlocked and yes, he still pines for Sookie but I wonder . . . I’m a big Team Bill fan and always will be but I’m thinking Bill might need to invest in some FriendZone stock. In Book 12 he lends his aid to Sookie I wondered about

TEAM ERIC FANS
In Deadlocked Eric becomes the prime suspect in a murder case and ends up

Key Points From Sookie Stackhouse Deadlocked – Book 12
Sookie’s character is much darker, perhaps because of how her life has changed throughout the other books.

Best Fantasy Books: The Mongoliad

Posted by: | Comments (0)

best fantasy books, the mongoliad by various authorsThe Mongoliad is a fantasy book that could only have been written in the last few years, as the social network of writers on the web began to spawn new ways to collaborate with readers to create stories. What began as a social experiment in storytelling has turned into a three-part series, of which this is the first book.

This group of some of the best and brightest writers in the fantasy book field decided to see what would happen when you wrote a story collaboratively amongst both writers and readers, on the web. This story is the end result of the first collaboration, after much editing and rewriting of course. Personally, I think the concept is brilliant and the end result is a wonderful pay off.

The Mongoliad is basically a fantasy book story within a story. It takes place in a 13th century world where wizards ride with warriors and the Mongol horde is about to descend on Europe. Leading them is an elder who is one of the elite from a band of warrior monks. Together with his mystic brothers they ride on a dangerous journey that will take them into new and perilous places. They will uncover secrets long hidden and learn of ancient languages amongst secret societies that have held the power to shape dynasties and empires for centuries untold.

Their tale is told through the efforts of Sir Richard F. Burton, who in the late 19th century was given a collection of long forgotten manuscripts to translate for a mysterious group. Although he dies before completing the task his work is not totally lost for a recent rediscovery of his translations thrill the world of archeology and the story is soon revealed.

It is a long journey to follow this route of tales, but one well worth the effort. This collection of writers makes this an amazing journey complete with magic, adventure and the kind of storytelling we all long for. It was beyond an enjoyable tale for me, it was a mystic journey to a magical place through time. You are so going to enjoy this amazing fantasy book The Mongoliad!

The fantasy series has a new sub-genre called steampunk and if you want to explore it there are plenty of great authors who have delved into the concept of a Victorian world that took a right turn and developed steam engines as its major form of energy and transportation. There is a romantic streak in almost any of the steampunk fantasy series as they look at a “might have been” concept of technology and fantasy colliding in a past that never was. It is a fun universe to play in. However, looking at most of the fantasy series that has come out from authors such as Tim Powers, James Blaylock and K.W. Jeter, who coined the term that kicked off the modern steampunk movement, they have been set in England. This isn’t surprising since much of its inspiration is from such writers as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

Cherie Priest is not a writer to stay within common conventions however, so when she looked at a writing genre that she had grown to love she wondered what it would be like to take the concept to the New World and set a fantasy series in America. Not content with just putting it in an American setting, her first book in this bold new fantasy series takes us to the Pacific Northwest to discover the steampunk world of Seattle. The series travels across the country, with the second book taking place in Chicago and Kentucky by way of dirigible and adventure and the third and fourth in the offbeat fantasy series set in Louisiana and Seattle with a familiar cast and some new heroes to cheer on.

The first book in this amazing fantasy series won numerous awards and I have more to say about that, along with a brief interview with Cherie which you can read here. If you get caught up in the whole Cherie Priest world of steampunk thing, you can also stay on top of what she is up to and see more of her cool steampunk stuff at the Clockwork Century site she runs for this fantasy series. I highly recommend both it and her books for fun and adventure at its best.

Book One – Boneshaker

Boneshaker by Cherie PriestDeadly gas from an accident has turned the once thriving gold-rush town of Seattle into a nightmare filled with the brainless dead once-humans called rotters and plenty of abandoned buildings. Into this world we are thrust with a quick kick to the butt when we meet our two heroes: Briar and her son Ezikial or Zeke. The fantasy series inaugural story is a full tilt adventure told from two points of view: Zeke’s as he enters the dangerous underground community of survivors and criminals to clear his father’s name and Briar who as his mother follows Zeke to save him from certain death even as she knows that to enter the city could spell her own doom.

The pace never slows down but I was never at a loss to follow the twistings and turnings of the two as they found accomplices to the heart of their quests. Zeke’s unending optimism marks his narrative from his mother’s, and we begin to suspect that Briar is hiding a dark secret from him. We see the depth of their love for each other, the unexpected kindness of criminals who live in the labyrinth below and come to respect the toughness Briar has had to acquire just to survive. She is a tenacious woman, willing to do whatever it takes to save her son. It is this trait that makes her stand out amongst the bevy of strong women that has become the forte of fantasy lately. This is an amazing introduction to a special fantasy series world so well conceived that at times it was hard to look up from my book and not expect to see the crumbling towers of Seattle outside my window.

Book Two – Clementine

Clementine by Cherie PriestI was surprised that this second book in the fantasy series takes us completely out of Seattle with a new main character but plenty of references and connections to Boneshaker. The great thing about it is you don’t have to read the first book to enjoy this second in the series. This time around we are introduced to a pair of great creations from Cherie who begin as antagonists but soon find they must find a way to work together if they are to meet their goals.

Maria is a spunky southern gal who has been a spy, an actress and plenty more she won’t talk about. But she has fallen on hard times, so she is in Chicago to work for the Pinkerton Agency. I am a bit of a buff about this time era, so even though this is steampunk and alternative, I was pleased to see this wonderfully interesting organization included in this world. Maria needs to find a certain Captain Heaney and bring him to justice, and Heaney needs to keep his skin in one piece while he struggles to regain his prized airship.

Heaney is a piece of work, and a fun one at that. He pretty much meets his match with Maria, but it is the breakneck adventures and just plain in your face risk-taking on both their parts that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Plus you can’t help but like the guy from the first time he shows up on the page – he is a rascal but a charming one.

Clementine has been a tough book to get your hands on in the past, as it went through its first print run rather quickly after the success of Boneshaker but I have been told that you can now get it in paperback as well as in ebook, so don’t be put off by the high prices on the hardback books from collectors. There are plenty of alternatives out there if you are not a collector of the early editions, though they are so beautiful you might just want to pay the price anyways.

Book Three –Ganymede

Ganymede by Cherie PriestAndan Clay may have thought he was ready to hang up his pirate hat and go straight, but one last run to get supplies for the city of Seattle’s underground may be his big ticket to a life he wants in one place with one woman. Too bad that life never quite cooperates as he gets a telegram from Josephine, a old lover and beautiful prostitute who is now a madam, that takes him back to New Orleans for one last trip to help an “old friend” with a mystery pilot job.

Soon he finds himself smack in the middle of a running battle between The Republic of Texas, the citizens of The Big Easy and the plan to move an amazing machine that could finally end a Civil War that has dragged on for over twenty years. The only problem is every other crew that tried to pilot this ship has died, drowned. For the Ganymede is not an airship, but one that “flies underwater” and he must figure out how to make sure he can pilot it without dooming his crew.

Just to make things a bit more interesting, there has been some strange voodoo going on in New Orleans as well. For the last few years people have been disappearing and tales of strange beings in the night, called “zombi” by the local voodoo queen, have turned out to be truer than anyone wants to believe. There may be a connection to the rotters in Seattle, but Andan isn’t sure he understands why. But he will need to find out if he is to successfully move through the city and find a way to pilot the Ganymede out of Lake Pontchartrain to the waiting Union Navy.

Book Four – Dreadnaught

Dreadnaught by Cherie PriestThis one begins in Confederate territory where Mercy Lynch is struggling as a nurse in a war hospital in Richmond Virginia. The Civil War has taken its toll on everyone, and so it is no surprise when she receives word from Clara Barton that Mercy’s husband has died in a POW camp and her father back on the west coast is dying. They have not spoken in years, but she feels she must somehow get through enemy lines and out to see him before he dies.

Reaching the Mississippi is a series of hair-raising episodes. However, it is not until she boards the train that will take her across the Rockies- a giant monster of a steam locomotive called the Dreadnaught -that her real dangers begin. She soon discovers that there is a mystery cargo in the last two cars that everyone seems to want.  The claim is that they are bodies of fallen soldiers, being sent home west to be buried. But that doesn’t explain everyone’s interest in this train; things just are not what they seem. Confederates scheme to attack and loot the train and criminal bushwackers attempt to highjack it. What can possibly be in those last two cars that are so important?

Once again Cherie Priest takes us on an adventure with a woman on a mission and a mystery that cries out to be solved. It feels as if everyone is in on the game with this one as all sides scheme to get at the elusive treasure and all Mercy wants to do is get to see her father one last time. Cherie’s persistent theme of family loyalty that began in the first book comes back to color so much of the emotion in this tale. It brings a different dimension to what in anyone else’s hands would simply be another fantasy series tale of high adventure.

Coming this Fall: The Inexplicables

the inexplicables by cherie priestThe fantasy series adventure continues in the world of steampunk with this latest novel. Cherie says it will continue the story introduced in Ganymede, so I am assuming this means our hero Andan Clay and the unstoppable Josephine will be back for more. But don’t take my word for it, go up on Amazon and reserve your copy now! You know you want to…

top fantasy stories, the etched city by k.j. bishop, best fantasy tales, great fantasy novels The Etched City by K.J. Bishop
Genre: Epic Fantasy

This is a tale of dark fantasy at its best. Here in the hot desert wasteland called Copper County, we come upon two travelers, seeming refugees but rather a pair who are fleeing the justice of the war machine called “The Army of Heroes”. Having served together  in a war that has devastated the countryside, they end up in Ashamoil, city that sprawls through the desert and is filled with every kind of violence and brutality you can imagine.

Raule was a surgeon in the war, and she continues her trade in the city by ministering to the poor and helpless, hoping to overcome her nightmares of misery and battlefields through this work. Qwynn, on the other hand, has always had a knack for turning misery into money and this place is no different for him. He soon finds himself the right hand man for the head of the Horn Fan Cartel. They rule the city and the slave trade that enriches it. His job, simple and straight-forward, is to enforce that rule.

It is the denizens of Ashamoil that really bring me back time and again to this book. The characters are so rich and the city is so real and yet so unworldly that it will have you wishing for a way to return again. If you are looking for a plot that moves from A to B, this is not a book for you. But if you are the type to enjoy wonderful writing, fascinating characters and great world-building then you will love this book.

In The Etched City author Bishop will take you on a ride through a city like no other. Filled with amazing characters, it is a tale of the life within the metropolis and the little stories that so often are just on the edge of most novels. It is a place that will haunt you and ask you to return again and again.
