Title: The Vampire Diaries: The Fury and Dark Reunion
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: December 26, 2007
Pages: 528
Genre: Young Adult Vampire
The third and fourth books in the Vampire Diaries series, The Fury and Dark Reunion, are combined into one novel and it concludes the series that brought a young high school girl, Elena, into a complicated triangle with two vampire brothers who both want her as their own but for very different reasons – one loves her completely and one just wants to own her.
In The Fury, Elena has become the same as the brothers – a vampire. As she adjusts to her new life as one of the “undead”, an unknown danger appears to be bearing down upon Fells Church which threatens them all. As a newly turned vampire, will Elena be able to help out not only her friends but also save the whole town? Or will she sacrifice her immortal life to protect the ones she loves?
Dark Reunion brings the group back together to conclude the story line as they face the biggest evil they have ever come up against. And it’s an evil so immense that even the Salvatore brothers are out of their depth. Without Elena to bind them all together, can the group learn to trust each other enough to overcome their fears and stand against the oppressive evil that’s overshadowing Fells Church.
These last two installments of the Vampire Diaries series bring to a closure L. J. Smith’s story of a vivacious, young high school girl who is in the middle of an unbelievable position, yet the author makes it quite believable. Elena is so engaging and her love for Stefan and her friends keeps you pulling for her through both stories. The conflict with Damon just adds to the spice and keeps the love story from becoming clingy and boring. The Vampire Diaries books are well written and never boring – which is a testament to L. J. Smith’s skill. Add The Fury and Dark Reunion to your vampire library.

Title: The Vampire Diaries Book 3: The Fury
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: April 27, 2010 (reissue)
Pages: 304
Genre: Young Adult Vampire
The third book in the Vampire Diaries series, The Fury, is a real shocker. Elena appears to have escaped death but at the cost of her humanity. She wonders – is death the worst thing that could happen to me? Maybe, maybe not as she realizes that she is now a full-fledged vampire and nothing will ever be the same again. How will she survive without seeing her family again?
With both Damon and Stefan acting as caregivers, her transition to her new life is never boring to say the least. The evil force that caused Elena’s death and unintentional rebirth is still malevolently stalking her. When the animals in Fell’s Church start to attack their owners, the stakes are raised because it’s not just Damon, Stefan, Elena and her cadre of friends who are at risk, it’s now the whole town that’s in danger. Will Alaric, the mysterious history teacher, be able to assist them? Or is he behind the attempts to kill them? With Elena now one of them, will Stefan and Damon finally make amends and heal their bitter past?
With this final installment in the Vampire Diaries initial trilogy, L. J. Smith concludes her tale of a popular high school girl who gets caught up in the middle of a fantastical situation with two competing vampires. Through it all, this young girl maintained her composure because she is led by an inner strength which keeps her focused and firm in her convictions, namely that Damon has some good in him somewhere and Stefan is the love of her life. In addition, her friends all stay true to one another and to Elena no matter how much they change – like, one of them becomes a vampire? That’s one of the most likeable things about the Vampire Diaries series – how these teens are faced with such bizarre events but their friendship is what helps them make the right decisions. They accept each other for better or worse. But really, can The Fury truly be the end of the series? Let’s hope not.

Title: The Vampire Diaries: The Struggle
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: March 30, 2010 (reissue)
Pages: 304
Genre: Young Adult Vampire
Book two of the Vampire Diaries, The Struggle, has Elena taking on Damon as she seeks to find out what he has done to his brother, Stefan, who is missing. Even though he is a very strong, very scary vampire, Elena does not care – she has to save the one she loves – and she will take him on, but at what price? Damon has decided that Elena will be the perfect partner for him, there is no way Stefan can truly appreciate this vibrant, spirited girl. And so begins a dance between these three – Elena, Stefan, and Damon – that will likely not end well. It usually doesn’t when two guys both want the same girl.
With her good friends supporting her, Elena uses Bonnie’s psychic powers to find out what happened to Stefan. But, she’s not to be left in peace in her search – Damon appears to have gained access to her house, and by extension, her family, which he uses to his advantage. How did that happen, she knows she did not invite him. What’s so scary is that no matter how hard she fights it, there exists some kind of attraction to this bad boy vampire which she refuses to acknowledge. Isn’t he the diabolical force behind the pages of her diary showing up everywhere at school? Pages that indict Stefan as the person who’s been murdering people in Fell’s Church?
Between fighting off Damon’s insidious advances, trying to figure out who stole her diary, and defending Stefan against false accusations of murder, Elena shows her strength and adaptability by handling it all with a steadfast strength that won’t be shaken because she follows her heart. Will Elena be forced to choose one of her two vampire admirers as her own? There will be no choice if Damon has his way. And, after several incidents happen that point to an even bigger evil than Damon inhabiting Fell’s Church, Elena is not sure that she and her friends will survive. What is targeting them? The action and intrigue are certainly ramped up in The Struggle, the second installment in the Vampire Diaries.

Title: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening
Author: L. J. Smith
Release Date: August 25, 2009 (re-release)
Pages: 272
Genre: Young Adult Vampire
The first installment in an excellent young adult vampire series, The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening, delivers an exciting take on the vampire genre. Elena is a beautiful student who is the queen of the high school – no one can touch her popularity. She can have anything she wants.
But, she’s not mean about it – she simply knows that she is one of the special people. So, when a new boy comes to school and he is completely immune to her charms, Elena is totally stumped. How dare he act like she doesn’t exist? How dare he snub her when she tries to introduce herself? All her angst goes into her diary which chronicles her plans to triumph over this arrogant boy.
Little does she know, the new guy, Stefan Salvatore, is very much aware of Elena but he’s doing his best to dissuade her from any involvement with him. That’s because Stefan is a dangerous individual and he knows how close he is to losing control around the beautiful, spirited Elena. However, he’s underestimated Elena – she has made it her personal mission to win him over. And, like all dangerous attractions, Stefan can’t resist her and they fall in love. Everything should be fine now, right? No, not really, because there are a couple of problems – he’s a vampire, he’s got lots of secrets, and one of his darkest secrets has shown up in Fells Church and it wants Elena too.
I have to admit, I’ve been watching the Vampire Diaries TV show and was instantly trying to compare the book to the show. But, after about twenty pages, it because apparent that the characters in the book are quite different from the tv storyline. Elena has a definite, unique personality of her own. With Stefan, you get a better understanding of why he is so sad and withdrawn. Damon, Stefan’s brother, is just a bad, bad man. I really liked this book and immediately dove into the next one upon finishing The Awakening. L. J. Smith has a crisp writing style that keeps you fully focused on the story and it’s given me a true craving for the Vampire Diaries series of books.
True Blood Season 4 Ep 12: And When I Die
Posted by: | Comments
Boo hoo, it’s the last episode of the season and I’m already depressed that I don’t get to watch Eric looking at Sookie with adoration for the next year. But, they certainly did deliver an exciting end to season four of True Blood. Let’s do a recap…
Marnie took over Lafayette’s body and he’s having breakfast with Jesus outside on their patio. Jesus senses something is wrong but can’t pinpoint it until he bends over to give him a kiss and he realizes that it’s not just Lafayette inhabiting that body. And that’s when he stabs Jesus through the hand with a fork, pinning him to the table. Very Soprano-esque of Marnie.
Marnie is using Lafayette to force Jesus to give her his brujo magic. She said she’ll stab out Layfayette’s eye if Jesus doesn’t transfer his power. He gives in and as he starts to chant in Spanish, his demon face appears and she stabs him in the stomach, then licks the blood off the knife. Next thing you see, Layfayette has the demon face. Guess the transfer worked but poor Jesus, I really liked him a lot.
Alcide tells Sookie that it’s over for good with Debbie. He tells her that they should be together, it makes common sense – very romantic. She tries to stop him in his tracks but he asks her to listen to him, and to try harder to get the vampires out of her life. Alcide then gets a call to go check on a job site. He realizes that his site supervisor has been glamoured and the cement has been excavated. Now there’s a big hole where a certain vampire king used to be (remember the end of season 3?). Note to self – never leave a vampire alive – even if you do wrap him in silver and bury him under yards of cement. They always manage to get loose.
Tara goes to Lafayette’s house and the half open door forebodes that something bad has happened. When she goes in, she sees Jesus tied to a chair and obviously dead. She quickly drives to Merlotte’s and tells Holly and Sookie that Marnie is back. Now Sookie understands why she has not been able to contact Eric and Bill. Marnie has tied Eric and Bill to a stake with silver and she’s ready to burn them. I guess she wanted a good old burning at the stake to atone for what the vampires did to Antonia hundreds of years ago.
As they distract Marnie, Holly spreads salt in a circle around the pyre and the three women join hands to call forth all the dead ancestors to help them. Antonia shows up and even Sookie’s grandmother makes an appearance. Antonia blows the fire out under Bill and Eric and Sookie’s grandmother forcefully pulls Marnie out of Lafayette. She’s really scared to go onto the next plane but she finally agrees and all the spirits disappear. Looks like she got away with killing Jesus with no consequences, even in the afterlife.
Lafayette is devastated that he killed Jesus even though it was Marnie holding the knife. Next he sees Jesus in the corner and he comes out to tell Lafayette that it’s okay he was killed, he probably would have gotten cancer anyway. Jesus tells him to just keep breathing, that he’s a medium, he can see Jesus whenever he wants.
Sookie looks like she having an orgasm as both Eric and Bill are drinking from her wrists to recover from their burns. She tells them to stop and that she needs to talk with both of them. Her speech consists of telling them how she’s forgiven them the wrongs they have done to her in the past, but that no matter what she does, someone she loves always gets hurt. Eric looks hopeful, then Bill looks hopeful, then Eric looks hopeful – each one thinking she is going to choose him. But nobody gets chosen when she says she is leaving both of them – she is walking away from it all. Don’t know if I could do that.
Nan and her storm troopers are greeted by Bill at his house. She wants them to join her in her mutiny against the American Vampire League as well as the Authority. When Nan mentions their “little fairy waitress”, Eric rips off the heads of the storm troopers as Bill stabs her in the heart and she’s now a pile of vampire mush.
Sookie returns home to be greeted by Debbie Pelt with a shotgun. Debbie’s about to shoot her when Tara races into the room and pushes Sookie out of the way, getting shot in the head for her efforts. Sookie attacks Debbie, gets the gun and shoves it under Debbie’s chin. As Debbie begs for her life, Sookie pulls the trigger. No more Debbie. She then picks up Tara and starts screaming for help over and over. Season 4 of True Blood ends with the loss of a couple of major characters – Tara and Jesus. I’ll miss them both. But, it’s been a great ride.
True Blood Season 4 Ep 11: Soul of Fire

Last week we left the vamp squad walking up to the witch’s haven with various and sundry weapons of mass destruction. They did not know Sookie was inside but Jason quickly runs up to let them know she is there. No one is happy to hear this and they all say some rather choice words about Sookie. Jason angrily reminds them how many times she has saved their lives. The vamp squad did not know there was a protective spell on the place that would not have allowed them to blow it up anyway.
Inside the haven, things are not going too well. Marnie has killed Casey when she tried to attack her. All of the witches in the coven now know that it is Marnie who is being so cruel, not Antonia. Jesus hatches a plan to get Antonia away from Marnie by using Casey’s body and pretending she is alive. He uses herbs and Marnie’s scarf to fight her with her own magic.
Andy is walking home after his intervention with Terry. He’s mad about being left out in the middle of the woods and he’s talking to himself when some bright lights appear in the sky. It looks some fairies are coming to visit and even though Andy tells the fairy who appears that she will be safe, she attacks him with her bright light.
Marcus is still trying to convince Debbie to leave with him. He has kidnapped Emma and wants to get out of the country. He is preying on Debbie’s weaknesses and it seems to be working. Luna, Alcide and Sam are trying to find out where Marcus is when they get a call from Emma and Alcide realizes that the call is originating form his own house.
Sookie convinces Marnie to talk to the vampires outside. Bill is taunting her with her lack of courage and finally Marnie gives in and takes Sookie with her. Bill tells her to let Sookie go and Marnie agrees if Bill and Eric kill themselves to save her. Sookie is speechless when Bill agrees. She begs them not do it. Bill tells Marnie if she reneges everyone will be slaughtered. Bill tells Eric he will shoot him and Pam is to shoot Bill. Eric nods and Bill starts to shoot when Pam loses it and runs to the van for the missile launcher. She shoots a missile into the haven and the spell stops it and it explodes onto the vampires.
Luna, Alcide, and Sam arrive at Alcide’s house to find Emma. Alcide goes upstairs as Luna takes Emma outside. They find Debbie on the bed in her nightie with Marcus in the room. Sam tells Marcus it is time to die as he puts down his gun to do it man to man. Debbie tries to stop them and Alcide throws her back on the bed.
Andy is not too sad to find the fairy, Mirella, on top of him when he wakes up. She tells him how handsome he is and she needs to trust him. She talks of the dangers in the woods and her need for his protection. She makes him swear to the light and then wants to make love.
Sam and Marcus are tearing up Alcide’s bedroom when Sam gets the upper hand. He decides to let Marcus live but Marcus grabs the gun and Alcide saves Sam’s life as he takes Marcus’. Debbie is angry at first but when she realizes that Alcide is now looking at her with hatred she quickly changes her tune. Alcide washes his hands of her forever and leaves her crying alone in the bedroom with the dead body.
Marnie is ready to get rid of the vampires once and for all when she forces everyone to get in a circle and she begins a new spell. All the vampires outside begin being forced to move into the protection spell around the haven which will kill them all. Jason cannot stop them but Sookie hears him and uses her fae magic to stop the circle. Marnie is so mad she places Sookie in the center of a fire circle and Bill and Eric can feel her fear. Jesus uses his magic with the help of his inner demon to break the bonds between Antonia and Marnie and Antonia is finally free to go.
Marnie loses the protection spell and Bill and Eric come in. Roy jumps in front of Marnie to save her and Eric pulls his heart out and evil Eric is certainly back because he stands there and sucks the blood from the heart through one of the valves like it’s a straw – everyone looks grossed out. Bill finally finishes off Marnie with a bullet to the head. The big finish happens when Lafayette lies in bed next to Jesus who has fallen asleep and Marnie’s ghost forces its way into his body. Guess we have not seen the last of her. Next week (and it’s the last episode) should be really interesting.
