“Night of Desirable Objects” (Fringe Episode 3), starts out with a construction worker who, while collecting his gear, sees an odd blue hand sticking out of the ground. When he touches the hand he’s completely sucked underground where he desperately tries to get away from a creature that appears to be down there.

Switch to Agent Olivia Dunham being checked out of the hospital, banged up and limping, but fully functional. And there, watching her in the parking lot, is her good friend Agent Charlie Francis. But, the look on his face is not very friendly. What’s up with that? Oh, that’s right, The Shifter has assumed Charlie’s identity and Olivia has no clue that her assassin is now hiding in her good friend’s body.

The Fringe Team (Peter, Olivia and Walter) travel to Pennsylvania to investigate a series of disappearances that no one can explain. Peter hopes it can provide insight to help Olivia unravel her own missing time. The team appears on-the-scene in a corn field talking to the local sheriff who is a bit put off by Walter’s weird antics. Oddly enough, while arguing with the locals over jurisdiction, Olivia is distracted by super-sensitive hearing that allows her to know the exact location of a fly in the room.

Could she be gaining superpowers after her trip to the parallel universe?

Back at the lab, Walter, the Fringe Team “mad scientist”, identifies the substance gathered in the Pennsylvania corn field as a paralytic substance – which causes him to immediately hypothesize that the killer is a mutant human – good old Walter, no garden variety serial killer for him. At the same time, Peter and Olivia locate a person named Andre Hughes, a retired doctor who keeps showing up at all of the disappearance sites. When they arrive at his house a very dirty Mr. Hughes comes up behind them with a shovel in his hand and his Wellington’s covered in mud. Mr. Hughes attempts to explain away his muddy appearance by complaining about water well problems and then invites them in. Once inside, Olivia’s super-hearing kicks in again and she’s sure someone in the house is hiding from them; she sneaks upstairs to have a look. She finds that Hughes has an impressively equipped lab in his home.

Olivia gets a visit from Fringe Agent Nina Sharp who says she is concerned for Olivia after the traumatic experience she’s been through. She explains that the mental impacts can be far worse than the physical. Nina refers Olivia to someone named “Sam Weiss”. Olivia declines the offer but takes the contact info. anyway.

After they interrogate the muddy Mr. Hughes we discover he lost his wife and son some time ago. Olivia and Peter decide to take him in for questioning. You initially start feeling sorry for the guy but when he refuses to give the Fringe Team a blood sample you begin wondering what he’s trying to hide.

Meanwhile the Fringe Team proceed to get an exhumation order for his dead wife and child.

Want to guess what they find?

They find an empty casket for the child; there’s a hole in the casket which looks like something chewed its way out. Mr. Hughes has a lot to explain; unfortunately The Fringe Team will get nothing further from him though – he hung himself in his cell; guess he knew what they were going to find.

Walter autopsies Mrs. Hughes and finds that she could not have possibly given birth to a child based on a pre-existing medical condition. Yet evidence shows that she did indeed have a baby.

But not just any baby.

The DNA analysis indicates that the baby was a mutant – created by Mr. Hughes for a wife who couldn’t have a baby naturally. Peter and Olivia return to the Hughes house because they believe the mutant child may still be alive. While under the house they discover half-eaten decomposing bodies. They find the monster and launch an attack. They’re able to defeat him (or it) but goodness, that creature is scary looking.

The show ends with Olivia’s super-hearing becoming out of control as she tries to relax in the tub. Knowing that this isn’t something she’s just imagining, she seeks out a man who’s the proprietor of a bowling alley. Olivia thinks he might know something about what happened to her in the parallel universe and might be able to explain her new powers. It looks like another unique character has been added to the mix . . . looking forward to the next episode of Fringe!

Fringe Episode 1Have you seen Fringe?

Fringe started last year as an edgy, sci-fi series about a FBI division that investigates bizarre, unusual happenings. The premiere for Season 2 continues the tradition with last season’s questions answered and new questions arising. The show did a good of covering old material for the new viewer while not boring the seasoned viewer.

Okay, here’s some quick background information if you’ve not seen the show:

The Fringe team consists of:

-Agent Olivia Dunham: Olivia is the female agent in the Fringe group. At the end of last season Olivia disappeared into a parallel universe/alternate reality and spoke with a scientist who had also disappeared.

-Walter Bishop: Walter is the “mad scientist” in the group. Walter was originally pulled in by the FBI Fringe Team because he participated in “fringe” science experiments years ago with another scientist named William Bell. Walter’s participation in those experiments eventually led to him being committed to an insane asylum.

-Peter Bishop: Peter is Walter’s son and the only one who can calm Walter down when he has one of his creative “fits”. Peter is a genius in his own rights and gorgeous to boot. Peter actually died when he was 7 but his father “retrieved” him from the parallel universe.

-William Bell: Bell is a missing scientist and former colleague of Walter’s. He believes the universe has “soft spots” or holes where it’s easy to cross over into a parallel universe.

-Agent Charlie Francis: Charlie is Olivia’s FBI partner in the Fringe group and also her close friend outside the office.

-Nina Sharp: the CEO of Massive Dynamics, a military-industrial corporation with strong ties to the government and lots of mysterious projects.

-Agent Phillip Broyles: The leader of the Fringe team who seems to have a connection to Nina Sharp and Massive Dynamics, making you wonder about his loyalties.

-The Shifter: we’re not sure who he is but he has the ability to assume the physical identity of others.

At the end of last season Olivia is seen in an office talking to William Bell, the missing scientist (Leonard Nimoy!). There’s a newspaper in the office covering President Obama’s victory. As the episode ends we see that William Bell’s office is inside one of the World Trade Center towers. The tower is completely intact. It’s then that we realize Olivia has disappeared into an alternate universe.

Okay, got it? Good, let’s continue.

This season’s Fringe premiere begins with a car wreck between two cars: Olivia’s car and one other. The car accident is so horrendous that the man who caused it should be dead by all accounts. Although he has a massive head wound he gets up and walks away from the wreck! The man in question is The Shifter. After the wreck he enters an apartment building, kills a man he sees in the hall and drags the man into an apartment. He then pushes a pronged device into the victim’s mouth and walks over to a mirror, where he breaks all of the bones in his own face, places the other end of the plug into his mouth and “shifts” his face until it’s identical to the face of the man on the floor. Cool huh?

Meanwhile, as Peter and his father Walter are out grocery shopping Peter receives a call about the bizarre car wreck. He’s told that Olivia’s car has been found in a wreck – but there’s no Olivia and no indication that she was even driving the car.

Peter and Walter race to the scene of the accident only to discover that the feds have been called in to investigate the car accident since it involves the car of a missing FBI agent (Olivia). The FBI agent in charge of the investigation is Mary Jessup, who has some tough questions about this bizarre accident, like how could Olivia’s car have been involved in a wreck if there was no driver? She questions Peter but he’s unwilling to provide answers.

While Agent Jessup grills Peter, Walter gets into the front seat of Olivia’s car and begins poking around. He leaves the car and soon after, out of nowhere, Olivia’s body comes flying through the windshield of the car! This was an awesome scene! Basically, she flew out of the windshield from thin air and lands dead on the ground. Only, she’s not dead.

By bringing her back – crashing into our world through the windshield of a car wreck that could not have happened – was ingenious. That is what makes this show so great. There is absolutely no way to guess what is going to happen next.

Olivia’s injuries leave her in a coma and her doctors are pretty sure she won’t recover. Walter’s certain she’s not done for but he can’t convince anyone else of that. As Peter waits diligently by her bedside for some sign of recovery Olivia suddenly wakes up speaking a strange language. In English, she tells Peter that there is something she has to do – that everyone’s life depends on her completing some mysterious task. We assume she must have learned something while in the parallel universe. This is a great set up for the rest of the season.

Now, back to The Shifter. After assuming his new identity he enters a shop and goes into a back room that contains a table with an old typewriter. He types questions into the typewriter and receives answers that are written backwards. We learn that he’s failed in his mission to kill Olivia.

The Shifter behaves like a machine; he doesn’t act human. He’s devoid of emotion, doesn’t appear to feel pain and seems to be following orders received from some other world. He reminds me of The Terminator. Could he be an android? Where did he come from?

The Shifter eventually makes his way to Olivia’s hospital room, assuming the identity of a nurse. He plans to interrogate and kill her but the Fringe group gets there in time to save her and put an end to this shape changing soldier. Or so they think . . .

Because of The Shifter’s persistence in trying to kill Olivia Peter realize that Olivia has forgotten something very important. When he repeats the strange words that she spoke when she first woke up she doesn’t remember saying them but Peter realizes they’re words his mother used to repeat to him every night before he went to sleep:

“Be a better man than your father”

With those words, we are left with a new season’s worth of mysteries to solve!

Matters Of The BloodWhy do so many of us LOVE vampire romance novels?

Is it the idea of living forever?

Is it the thrill we feel thinking of the powers we could have if we were supernatural?

Maybe it’s just the fact that all the vampire men are hot? Whatever the reason, all of these questions are satisfied in the new vampire novel by Maria Lima titled Matters of the Blood. This is the first novel in a series called the Blood Line and it has something to satisfy every type of supernatural fantasy fan. The novel delivers its share of hot vampires with a hot human or two thrown in as well.

The main character, Keira, is a supernatural creature who “changes”, but what she changes into is always an unknown. Will she be a vampire? A shapeshifter? A necromancer? It makes for a suspense-filled storyline – never knowing what she will become. Keira and her clan can become one of any number of supernatural beings but that doesn’t mean she can control her powers. Think of it, if you became a shapeshifter in the blink of an eye, would you know what to do? No learning curve, you better get shifting – or running, as the case may be. It sets up a scenario for some major difficulties for Keira as the book progresses.

In the novel, vampires and other supernaturals live together in society as normal people but keep their true identities a secret from the human population. The ironic thing is that they have kept their secret so well that one supernatural group does not know the other exists. The action begins when Keira’s annoying human cousin is murdered and the prime suspect is a mysterious newcomer in town. A mysterious newcomer that Keira wants to get to know a whole lot better, giving her lots of motivation to figure out who the true killer is.

The author, Maria Lima, gives us a new approach to the vampire storyline that is fresh, unpredictable and a good read. Since the characters have the ability to become any type of creature, you never know what to expect. And, since Keira doesn’t know what she’ll “change” into, you can’t forsee how she’ll handle her various dilemmas. This makes for exciting plot potential in both this and future novels in the series. Matters Of The Blood is a vampire novel that represents one of the best vampire books I’ve read in a long time. Happy reading!

Young Adult Fantasy BooksThe “young adult” fantasy book market is really hot now. Particularly trendy are young adult books that focus on vampires. Here are some of the more popular offerings:

  • The Twilight Series
  • Blue Bloods
  • House of Night
  • Vampire Academy
  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Vampire Kisses
  • Morganville Vampires
  • Vampire Beach

All of these books are advertised as young adult or teen fantasy and target the respective demographic groups. Wikipedia defines young adults as 13-20 year olds and teenagers as 13-19 year olds.

Given the fairly wide age span in each category, are young adult/teen fantasy books really appropriate for ALL teens?

I occasionally receive emails from people asking me to recommend fantasy books that are appropriate for young adults and teens. I get requests from parents as well as from the teens themselves. Because I read and purchase so many urban fantasy books it’s not surprising that I frequently come into contact with books geared toward young adults. So you’d think it would be easy for me to provide parents and teenagers with “age appropriate” recommendations, right?

Wrong.

Why? Because the maturity level (more so than the age) of the teen/young adult in question has to be considered. And it differs for each person. Whereas one 15 year-old might be entirely comfortable reading a fantasy book with graphic violence the same book might not be appropriate for a different teen of the same age. And at what age is it okay for teens to read books with general descriptions of sex? What about explicit sex scenes?

By now you’re probably wondering what I tell parents or teens asking for age appropriate fantasy book recommendations.

I tell them the truth and let them make the decision as to whether the book is appropriate for them. I used to include statements like “inappropriate for someone under 16″ but I stopped doing that because as I stated earlier, it’s really the maturity level that counts. So when responding to email inquiries of this nature I’ve started using the following descriptors which (I hope) help people decide whether a book is age appropriate. Here’s what I’ve started telling them:

-whether the book contains romance, sexual innuendos, references to sexual acts or explicit sex scenes;
-whether the book contains mild, moderate, excessive or graphic violence;
-whether the book contains occasional, regular, or frequent profanity;
-whether the characters engage in alcohol consumption or drug use.

All of this is completely subjective of course, but it hopefully helps parents make informed decisions.

Some of the “safer” young adult fantasy books are listed below. They contain romance or mild sexual innuendos or references, mild or moderate (not explicit) violence, minor or no profanity and minor alcohol consumption:

-Night Runner by Max Turner
-Glass Houses (Morganville Vampires, Book 1) by Rachel Caine
-Corbenic by Catherine Fisher
-Ghost Huntress series by Marley Gibson
-Night World series by L.J. Smith
-Magic in Manhattan series by Sarah Mlynowski
-Vampire Kisses series by Ellen Schreiber
-Sucks to Be Me by Kimberly Pauley Mirrorstone
-How to Ditch Your Fairy by Justine Larbalestier
-Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke
-Intertwined by Gena Showalter
-Good Ghouls Do by Julie Kenner
-Suck It Up! by Brian Meehl

I’ve created this Teen Fantasy Book List at Amazon which lets you scroll through reviews to see what other people think of them. Again, this is completely subjective and just my opinion.

Surprisingly enough, the books parents ask me about most often are the Sookie Stackhouse books, which I’m sure is linked to the popularity of True Blood. If you’ve read the books you know that the TV series is more graphic (think orgies) than the novels however, the books do contain explicit sex scenes. I was at one website (not this one) and saw an inquiry from a 13-year old girl who’d been watching True Blood and wanted to know if the Sookie Stackhouse books were appropriate for her to read. Sorry, I know what I said about maturity being a better indicator than age, but come on, 13 years old and watching True Blood? I responded by expressing my opinion that both the books and the True Blood series were for adults. Someone else chimed in (rightly so in my opinion) and instructed her not to identify herself online (giving out her name) as a 13 year old girl. She never responded to either of our comments.

So what do you think – what’s your definition of a “young adult” fantasy book? What other books can I add to the list?

True Blood Season Finale Contest Winner

Okay, by now you should know who got killed in the True Blood Season 2 finale episode.

When Maryann was killed I immediately used the random integer software to select the lucky winner! Congratulations LisaL!

But then, lo and behold, Eggs got killed as well! Or did he? Well, for the sake of this contest I’m going to assume he’s dead. So when he got shot I had 2 choices:

1. Throw the names of the people who voted for Maryann into the pot along with the people who correctly guessed that Eggs would get killed, and select ONE winner.

2. Select TWO winners.

Hmmn, what to do . . . . . ?

Well, since this has been such a great True Blood season I decided to go with Option #2! Yes, in addition to awarding a prize to “LisaL” who correctly predicted that Maryann would be killed, I also decided to select a winner from the contestants who predicted that Eggs would be killed!

So the 2 winners are:

-LisaL (chose the Sookie Stackhouse box set)
-Traci (chose the $30 Amazon gift card)

Congratulations to LisaL and Traci! Please check your email accounts – you’ve got 24 hours to respond or I’ll roll the dice and select someone else. Thanks to everyone else who entered the contest!

I encourage you to continue visiting the site. I’ve got lots of great urban fantasy books that will be reviewed here. Additionally, since I buy WAY too many books I plan on holding several book giveaway contests during the next few months!

____________________________
UPDATE:

As of this writing neither of the winners have responded to my email messages. Therefore as promised, I’ve rolled the dice again and chosen 2 new winners:

-Dea
-Yelitza

Congrats to the new winners and remember, you have 24 hours in which to claim your prize (6:00am EST Wednesday, Sept. 16th) so please check your email.

I guess some people enter contests and then never check in to see if they’ve won . . . .
_____________________________
ANOTHER UPDATE (09/16/09):

Thus far, from “Round 2″ only Yelitza has responded. Never heard from Dea although it’s been 36 hours.

As you know each winner has 24 hours in which to respond; this was explained in the post above and also in the email that was sent to the winners. Although one winner from “Round 1″ did eventually respond the day after the deadline, if I award a prize to someone who responds after the deadline it means I’ll have to do the same for the other people, whenever they eventually respond. I hope everyone understands that I have to attach a deadline to the response time – otherwise I’d be waiting forever for people to respond. Case in point: to this date two of the selected winners have never responded to my email notice. It’s interesting, I’ve seen this happen at other book sites as well. People enter contests and then don’t check their email accounts.

Okay. let’s try this one more time. The new “Maryann will die” winner is:

Susan McConnell!

Susan, PLEASE respond to your email by Thursday, 6:30pm EST.

Did you ever think it would be this hard to give away a prize?

True Blood Episode 12

For those of you in the contest that predicted Maryann would die…Yahtzee! But did Eggs? I guess we will find out in June.

At least one egg-nigma was solved. Sookie had a great line when she asked, “What is up with the egg? Did you lay it?” Ostrich egg. All-righty, then.

Another question answered, “How do you kill a maenad?” To quote a line from a classic 80’s movie, The Breakfast Club, “You mess with the bull, you get the horns.” I was glad that Maryann’s god finally came, even if it was really Sam parading around as a Brahma bull. She’d waited long enough. The ceremony was lovely. At so many weddings the bridesmaid’s dresses are just hideous, but I have to say, Lafayette looked fantastic. Kudos to Sam and Bill for joining forces to save the woman they both love, and the town of Bon Temps, too.

Tonight’s episode sure went to Team Bill. He definitely upped his boyfriend game tonight. He saved his girl, and her town. He finally took her out for a decent date (not to mention popping the question), and what does he get for his trouble? Well, we are not sure what he’s getting, are we? Is Eric “personally taking care of him?” Or perhaps he’s been taken by Lorena?

Other puzzles to ponder between now and June 2010:

-Will Hoyte and Jessica reunite?

-Will Eggs survive being shot by Jason?

-Will anyone find out that Jason shot Eggs instead of Andy?

-Will Sam find his family? Will he like them if he does or are they really bad people?

-Why is the Queen having Eric and Lafayette sell V?

-Why does Sookie’s cousin Handley dress like Ellie Mae from the Beverly Hillbillies?

-Will we get to see Eric naked? (That last one is personal, sorry.)

I suppose if we want the answers to these questions, we’ll have to wait. Same vamp time, same vamp channel, entirely different year! (That’s an old Batman TV reference. BTW, when did vamps stop turning into bats?)

_________________________

Let’s give a round of applause to Kitty Kat for her wonderful reviews of True Blood! Hasn’t she done a great job? Well, not to worry, she’s not going away. She’ll continue being a guest reviewer at the site; she’ll be reviewing fantasy books! And you know she’ll give you the real skinny on what’s good!

And don’t go to bed yet! We’ll announce the winner of the True Blood “Finale Prediction” Contest at midnight!
