Mud People Do It In The Dirt: Sookie, frustrated and scared that Bill might be one of the vampires burned to death by a local vigilante group, lashes out at Tara. Sookie (who I think over-reacted a bit) visits Bill’s grave after dark to mourn his death. Or, his re-death. What follows is a dirty, somewhat animalistic scene between she and Bill (oh yeah, Bill is alive, or rather, he’s still dead).
And once again, Sookie needs to stop with the kiss-and-tell. And she’s becoming really defensive with Sam when it comes to her relationship with Bill.
Oh Yes They Call Him the Streak: Sam denies running through the woods naked. Come on, we’d know that butt anywhere. If it was him I’m not too happy with the fact that he used Terry Bellefleur’s shell-shocked condition as a way to convince him that he (Terry) was seeing things.
Be Careful What You Wish For: Sookie learns that Bill’s protectiveness causes the death of a family member. She’s shocked and frightened at his actions and has trouble keeping her calm, especially in wake of her grandmother’s recent death.
New V Sex Birth Control: Jason discovers that you don’t need to actually have intercourse to have sex while hopped up on V. Although convinced he and Amy shared a great sexual experience he learns that they barely touched one another.
Seeing Is Believing: Tara is absolutely amazed at the effect the excorcism has has on her mother’s behavior. On the surface, it looks as if Mrs. Thornton has kicked her alcoholism and turned a new leaf. After her nasty behavior toward Sam, a church lady, and Sookie, Tara seeks out the local voodoo priestess so she can rid her of her own “evil” ways.
Seeing Is Not Believing: Amy Burley, the newest cast member of True Blood, charms the locals at Merlotte’s bar. Looks like she might be the new waitress there.
However, all is not as it seems with Amy. We learn that she’s as addicted to V as Jason, perhaps more so because it appears that she’s been using it longer. Yes, Jason put himself in danger at Fangtasia in pursuit of V but Amy’s willing to pursue even more dangerous options to obtain the substance. In my review of True Blood Episode 7 I predicted that there was a darker side to Amy. We’re seeing that now.
Vampire Couch Potato? Lafayette’s V connection turns out to be a lonely, introverted geekish looking guy who’s looking for a true relationship. Who knew vampires had relationship problems like the rest of us?
When Eric Calls .. . Eric Northman, the hunky vampire owner of Fangtasia, instructs Bill to bring Sookie to his bar so she can determine the identity of a thief that’s been stealing money from the business. Sookie reluctantly agrees and reads the minds of several of Eric’s human employees in order to locate the thief. When she attempts to read an employee named Ginger’s mind she discovers that part of the girl’s memory has been erased. By a vampire. Who happens to be in the room at the time.
Question: where is Eric’s European accent? The actor, Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd, actually has an accent in real life – why not let him use it on the show? Why Americanize the guy? He’s not American.
Weirdest Scene: Bill and Sookie getting it on in the graveyard.
Funniest Line: Sam to Tara: “Sometimes, you grunt.”

There’s Something About Amy: New True Blood Cast Member
Posted by: | Comments
In True Blood Episode 7 Burning House of Love Jason Stackhouse meets a mysterious young lady at Fangtasia, the vampire bar that Eric Northman owns in Shreveport. She comes to Jason’s rescue when he approaches a vampire bartender about obtaining vampire blood.
Meet Amy Burley (portrayed by Lizzy Caplan), the newest cast member of True Blood.
Amy lures Jason away from the bar by telling him she has a stash of “V” that she’ll share with him. They make their way back to Jason’s place where Amy explains that V comes from the earth and is “nature’s greatest gift.” She makes a big production out of grinding two drops of vampire blood with aspirin; what should be a simple process turns into something ritualistic. She then prays over the substance, gives thanks to the earth from which it came, and snorts a line of the powder up her nose. Jason follows suit.
From here, things get weird.
What follows is reminiscent of a Cheech and Chong movie. We hear birds chirping and see fuzzy psychedelic images of Jason and Amy. Everything seems to move in slow motion. When they touch one another, multi-colored sparkles appear in the air between them.
So who is this Amy Burley anyway?
Here are a few excerpts about Amy from the Charlaine Harris book Dead Until Dark. We never “see” Amy in the book, she’s simply referenced a few times:
According to HBO: “this season Lizzy Caplan (Amy) will return to television with a strong recurring role in Alan Ball’s new HBO series True Blood.” So, unlike what happens in the book, it sounds like we’ll see more of her new age character this season.
Here are some questions I have about Amy Burley:
- Was Amy simply in the right place at the right time for Jason’s rescue or was it more of a planned event? Was Amy waiting for Jason or just any poor sucker looking for V?
- How many women walk around with a mortar and pestle in their handbags? Hmmn. Perhaps a witch that needs to whip up a quick eye of newt souffle?
- What were those Lucky Charms type sparkles that appeared between Jason and Amy whenever they touched one another?
Want to know what I think? I think she’s a magical character with a dark, evil side side. I think she’ll turn on Jason if provoked and show her true nature. I believe she’ll play a prominent role in the series because I predict she’ll eventually get a waitress job at Merlotte’s and pique Sam’s interest, thereby making Tara jealous. This might be the catalyst that makes Tara visit the voodoo doctor who correctly guessed that Tara has intimacy issues with men. Hmmn, this could get interesting.
If she’s really a magical creature Sookie should be able to determine her otherworldly qualities by probing her mind.
Overall, I think Amy is on a mission with a hidden agenda that could harm Jason and other townspeople. Of course, I could be wrong.
Let’s watch her closely during the next episode . . . .
Fantasy Book Review: Hex Appeal by Linda Wisdom
Posted by: | Comments
Meet Jazz Tremaine, a gutsy fashion conscious witch who removes evil spells and curses for a living and works as a limo driver (for supernatural clients) in her spare time. Jazz, although over 700 years old, doesn’t look a day over 30 thanks to some pretty powerful anti-aging witch genes she was born with! Hex Appeal is the second book in the Jazz Tremaine series.
The Story:
Jazz clearly has a penchant for attracting trouble. The story opens with her defending the honor of her magical bunny slippers. It seems the slippers, Fluff and Puff, have a voracious appetite that includes creatures that walk on two feet. When a Were carnival worker goes missing and the slippers are found near the scene of the crime, they become the prime suspects in the apparent homicide. It doesn’t help that the slippers spit out a button belonging to the alleged victim while Jazz is declaring their innocence.
Fortunately, Jazz is able to avert the threat of a full-blown hearing that would inevitably put the slippers on trial, thereby giving herself time to conduct an investigation of her own.
Meanwhile, Jazz and her hunky vampire boyfriend individually begin having violent nightmares which appear to be magically induced. Even Jazz, a top notch curse remover, is unable to ward against the dreams. Things reach a critical stage when she starts having dreams about being human (the horror) because she knows magically triggered dreams can actually come true. She soon realizes that someone or something very powerful is deliberately causing the dreams and goes on a mission to determine their identity.
The ensemble cast in the book includes:
-Nick, Jazz’s handsome vampire boyfriend with former ties to a group called The Protectorate, a well organized (and manipulative) group that govern and enforce rules of conduct for the vampire community.
-Krebs, Jazz’s human housemate who’s still learning about the supernatural way of life. He runs websites for a living and in this installment meets the woman of his dreams. Who cares that she doesn’t have a pulse?
-Irma, Jazz’s own personal ghost who’s stuck with a 1950′s Donna Reed look. Irma accompanies Jazz on many of her excursions and serves as the wise-cracking sidekick.
-”Dog”, a ghostly canine that doesn’t have a name during most of the book. “Dog” likes to scare cats and slobbers invisible gooey ectoplasm.
-Croc and Delilah, Jazz’s new flirty stilettos that coo and like to wear makeup.
-And of course, Fluff and Puff, the mischievous (but potentially dangerous) bunny slippers that love nachos and bean dip.
At the very start of the story the two main characters, Jazz and Nick, have a fight which leads to a break-up, but fortunately, the author doesn’t belabor this matter for very long. They soon reunite and focus their efforts on finding out what happened to the missing Were and tracking down the person(s) responsible for their nightmares. Along the way we learn more about their world and the work they do to protect humans from supernatural (and human) predators and evildoers. Because I’ve not read the first book in the series these scenes provided insight into the personalities of the characters and helped explain their motivations.
Linda Wisdom has created a main character that’s smart enough to be believable and wacky enough to be enjoyable without crossing into the annoying dumb blonde territory. The book can definitely stand alone as a single work of fiction; reading 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover, the first book in the series, will likely provide additional backstory but then again, I didn’t feel as if there were any gaps in this book’s storyline.
Overall, Hex Appeal is a light, humorous (and at times steamy!) read that paranormal romance fans will likely enjoy.
True Blood Episode 7 Review – Burning House of Love

Here’s what happens in True Blood Episode 7 – Burning House of Love:
No Morning After Cuddles for Sookie: Well, Sookie is no longer a virgin thanks to vampire Bill. Unfortunately, she’ll never have morning after sex with him because during the day he has to sleep in a hole dug inside a closet.
Skeletons In the Closet: While sharing a bath she reveals that her Uncle Bartlett used to touch her inappropriately. The event still haunts Sookie but actually affects Bill even worse. As such, he exacts his own form of vengeance on Sookie’s behalf.
Jason “Fix”ation with V: Jason visits Lafayette seeking more V but is turned away. After attempting to steal his grandmother’s jewelry (Sookie catches him before he gets away) he eventually makes his way to Fangtasia, the vampire bar in Shrevport, hoping to obtain more of the substance. Fortunately for him, Amy Burley, a young woman at the bar, stops him from getting hurt. She goes back to his place with him. I like Amy’s character. She’s an intelligent girl who comes from what sounds to be an affluent family. However, she’s also reveres the magical nature of V and shares her philosophy on the substance with Jason while they snort it.
There may be more to Amy than meets the eye. She may be a magical or supernatural creature. I’m sure we’ll see more of her in later episodes.
Sookie Kisses and Tells: Now tell me how much sense this makes: 2 women have been killed because of their intimate association with vampires. Sookie’s own grandmother was killed because Sookie, the intended victim, wasn’t at home at the time. But yet, Sookie announces to the entire Merlotte bar that she’s had sex with Bill. What was she thinking?
The Devil in Miss Thornton: Tara’s mother, convinced there’s a demon inside her making her an alcoholic, convinces Tara to pay $445 for an exorcism. It’s sad to see her mother so convinced that some evil spirit inside her is making her drink. Tara sees this and agrees to give her the money and takes her to the voodoo doctor. The ritual itself is brilliantly filmed and dramatized. It’s dark, mysterious, and thoroughly entertaining. It’s also pretty convincing. I’m thinkin’ maybe Tara’s mother was on to something . . . .
Tara Has Intimacy Issues, Part II: Although Sam and Tara are supposed to be friends with benefits Sam clearly wants more of an emotional commitment from Tara. Tara, one assumes because of her childhood, has trouble expressing her feelings.
Sam, My Hero: Malcolm and his killer vampire buddies decide to go looking for “food” at Merlotte’s. Not the synthetic Tru-Beverage stuff, but the real deal. Since Sam doesn’t take too kindly to people wanting to suck on the neck of his customers he has a stand-off with Malcolm. Before things get too much out of hand Bill appears and intervenes. He leaves with the thugs in order to get them out of the bar.
Come on Baby, Light My Fire: Malcolm and his vampire thugs seriously underestimate the vigilante nature of some of the human thugs in Bon Temps. You see, they don’t cotton to strangers trying to threaten and harass the townspeople. That’s their job. As such, a few of them take matters into their own hands and well . . . . let’s just say that Malcolm won’t be around for Season 2.
Weirdest Scene in the Episode: Sam Merlotte running naked through the woods. I really like Sam’s character but Jason has a nicer butt.
